The wounded and humiliated Royal Blues are coming at RheinEnergieStadion desperate for a win when they face cheery Billy Goats in Saturday’s Bundesliga clash.
FC Koln vs Schalke: Match Preview
A memorable away day for all that made the trip to Berlin on last Saturday afternoon as the Billy Goats secured a 5:0 win over Hertha BSC, thanks to master class performances from Jhon Cordoba and Florian Kainz.
Quite a nice recovery the Goats have made following 1-4 defeat they’ve suffered just two weeks ago against rampaging Bayern Munich; inspiring show of force in Berlin made for 8th victory of the season for Markus Gisdol and his men, their sixth in last eight games since miraculous revival during December which have them placed 13th at Bundesliga table with a game in hand.
Before Bayern Munich cast them aside, Koln have racked up a rather impressive four consecutive W in front of their own fans, utterly demolishing Freiburg and Europa League contenders Wolfsburg, with their biggest and most impressive scalp of the streak being 2-0 win over Bayer Leverkusen.
No points for the abhorrent Royal Blues in round #23 of Bundesliga as the Red Bulls came, saw and conquered VELTINS-Arena, flying back to Leipzig with a superb and well deserved 5-0 win in the bag.
Misery definitely reside in Gelsenkirchen as Schalke 04 are still looking for a sweet taste of win, something they haven’t experienced since the closing days of January; Champions League football they’ve desired is now unattainable dream as the top four moved on while David Wagner’s men remained at 6th, spinning their wheels and making misstep after misstep…
On the road, the Royal Blues’ winless run extend back to November and three points they’ve grabbed off Werder since when they’ve managed three draws versus uninspired opponents (with the latest being relegation strugglers FSV Mainz) whilst losing to Leverkusen and Bayern, who dropped five past them.
Most of the Geißböcke are back in the squad following huge spells on the sidelines but there’s a few of them that won’t be available to Markus Gisdol till foreseeable future, including Rafael Czichos, Noah Katterbach and Thomas Kessler while Daniel Caligiuri and Benjamin Stambouli are only ones MIA for Schalke 04.

FC Koln vs Schalke: Prediction
While the Royal Blues’ strike force has been on an extended holiday in the last month or so, the Goats of Cologne aren’t exactly known as the connoisseurs of defense which, combined with a thorough look back through their past duels made me choose BTTS as my first recommendation.
Second one, being a hypocrite that I am, will be a distancing of the sort from that same history and their past reconciliations.
Gelsenkirchen-based side has been definitely more successful of the two in the past few years but their bad form at the moment and winless streak that run deep made me side with Koln and pick them as likely winner in the coming duel. They’ve been brilliant in front of their own fans against similar or even better opposition and led by phenomenal Jhon Cordoba should get the better off troubled Schalke.
