FC Koln vs Mainz, Sunday, 17 May 2020, German Bundesliga
Kick-off at 14:30 UK / 15:30 CET at RheinEnergieStadion (Cologne).
The Billy Goats are hoping to keep their Europa League dreams alive when they welcome rejuvenated relegation contender Mainz to RheinEnergieStadion in Sunday’s Bundesliga clash.
Koln fell to a 2:1 defeat to Borussia Monchengladbach in in their last outing, which happened to be Bundesliga’s first ever game behind closed doors (due to threat that is Coronavirus). The Goats were the better side for long periods but failed to capitalize on their chances.
Unlucky defeat against one of the league better team in the league came on the back of a three match winning streak, helped propelled Markus Gisdol’s men to push up to 10th in table. Back in December, they were potential relegation candidates, but the strong run in 2020 place them five points off Europa League places.
Koln at RheinEnergieStadion have been almost impeccable in recent times. A loss against Bayern aside, they played their opponents off the pitch, with their biggest scalp being Leverkusen, though their latest opponent isn’t a small fly either as the Goats brushed Schalke 04 aside in 3-0 victory.
Meantime, FSV Mainz sit 1 place above the relegation zone. Their last game was on 8th March, 1-1 stalemate against Fortuna Dusseldorf, a late goal took away the three points at the Opel Arena.
Split spoils in opening game of the March for 05ers meant that they’ve kept their distance over Fortuna, first team below the line, with four points dividing the 15th and 16th placed sides on Bundesliga table.
Achim Beierlorzer men are, opening few weeks of the season aside, really hit or miss when it come to their travels, with a huge triumph following humiliating defeat, rinse and repeat as the 05ers don’t do draws at all; they imploded on their latest excursion, losing 4-0 to EL contending Wolves and before that, they’ve pillaged the capital, bringing home all the goods in 1-3 win against Hertha.

FC Koln vs Mainz: Prediction
Gisdol’s men did lost last time they’ve faced Mainz but situation has changed drastically since then. Köln is playing their best football in recent times, outscoring opponents who are surely more formidable than Mainz and with Europa League on the horizon, there’s no reason to doubt them as they’ll push their limits till the fat lady sings.
While most of their previous encounters has lacked in flair and goals, this one definitely won’t. Mainz has been favoring gung ho approach on their travels for a while and there’s no reason for them to stop now when they’ll face similarly minded opponent so there’s hope it’ll be raining goals during Sunday afternoon in Cologne.
