FC Koln vs Mainz Match Preview
Koln fell to a 2:1 defeat to Borussia Monchengladbach in Borussia-Park on Wednesday evening in Bundesliga’s first ever game behind closed doors (due to threat that is Coronavirus), with the Goats being the better side for long periods but failing to capitalize on their chances.
Unlucky defeat against one of the league better teams followed three-game winning run, which propelled Markus Gisdol’s men up the table, from fight for their own life and Bundesliga survival back in December to 10th place they occupy now, five points off Europa League places and with favorable schedule to bring a glimmer of hope for reaching it.
Köln at RheinEnergieStadion have been almost impeccable in recent times where they’ve, Bayern loss aside, beaten any opponent they faced in 2020, outscoring and playing them off the pitch, with their biggest scalp being Leverkusen, though their latest opponent isn’t a small fly either as the Goats brushed Schalke 04 aside in 3-0 victory.
Up until the twilight of the game, it looked as though FSV Mainz would be able to come out on top in relegation six-pointer but then, concentration lapse and one miscommunication in the closing minutes allowed Fortuna Düsseldorf to equalize and take home valuable point from Opel Arena.
Split spoils in opening game of the March for 05ers meant that they’ve kept their distance over Fortuna, first team below the line, with four points dividing the 15th and 16th placed sides on Bundesliga table.
Achim Beierlorzer men are, opening few weeks of the season aside, really hit or miss when it come to their travels, with a huge triumph following humiliating defeat, rinse and repeat as the 05ers don’t do draws at all; they imploded on their latest excursion, losing 4-0 to EL contending Wolves and before that, they’ve pillaged the capital, bringing home all the goods in 1-3 win against Hertha.
Long list of absentees for Köln but that’s something they’ve surely got used to at this point. Niklas Hauptmann, Sebastiaan Bornauw, Birger Verstraete, Rafael Czichos and Thomas Kessler are all set to miss Saturday’s clash v Mainz.
On the other side of the pitch, the 05ers will be missing suspended Jean-Philippe Mateta, as well as Robin Zentner and Alexander Hack but everyone else is ready and able to take on the rampaging Goats.

FC Köln vs Mainz: Prediction
Gisdol’s pupils did lost last time they’ve faced Mainz but situation has changed drastically since then.
Koln is playing their best football in recent times, outscoring opponents who are surely more formidable than Mainz and with Europa League on the horizon, there’s no reason to doubt them as they’ll push their limits till the fat lady sings. Or Coronavirus put a premature stop to Bundesliga.
While most of their previous encounters has lacked in flair and goals, this one definitely won’t. Mainz has been favoring gung ho approach on their travels for a while and there’s no reason for them to stop now when they’ll face similarly minded opponent so there’s hope it’ll be raining goals during Saturday afternoon in Cologne.
