Jamaica lock horns with Canada in the third quarter finals of the 2017 CONCACAF Gold Cup, two years after their meeting at the group phase of the same tournament.
The teams reached this far in similar fashion by securing second spots in their respective groups. Their stats in the tournament is also similar having won the opening group game followed by back-to-back draws. However, their performances so far in the competition is a contrast by all means.
Jamaica were strong favorites for the second spot in Group C with Mexico being the only team which could pose a serious threat to them. Both El Salvador and Curacao could have been easily blown out, but the Reggae Boyz were too cautious in their approach. The attacking department is a major worry for head-coach Darren Mattocks. It was often frustrating to watch them posing no serious threat to El Salvador in the final group game that finished 1-1. On the other hand, they failed to register a single shot on goal in the goal-less draw against Mexico. A huge improvement is needed if they are to get past Canada, who look to be in good spirits at the moment.
The Canucks could be seen as a team that took their chances well to reach this far in the tournament. They pushed Honduras behind for a second spot by holding the latter to a goal-less draw. However, the highlight of their performance so far is the fighting spirit shown in the 1-1 draw against Costa Rica.
Jamaica vs Canada: Head-to-head
The last meeting between the two teams was at the group phase of the last edition’s Gold Cup. Jamaica edged a 1-0 on matchday 2 at the BBVA Compass Stadium in Houston.
Meantime, Canada were victorious in the two previous meetings against Jamaica at the tournament – 1-0 on 2009 and 3-2 in 1999.
However, there is little to choose from the recent overall h2h as Jamaica are only ahead by a narrow margin – 3 wins, 1 draw against 2 wins for Canada.
Jamaica vs Canada: Prediction
Judging by the group stage performances, Canada are a better side in terms of positive intent, which is visible with their expansive passing game. The Canucks do boast some some talented feet that can become a constant menace to any defensive unit.
On the contrary, Jamaica’s core problems lies in creation of scoring chances. At time, it appears that the Caribbeans have little intention of playing the ball forward. They have been bailed out many time by the heroics of Andre Blake between the posts. It is hard to seen them getting better of the Canadians with a negative mindset.
