Iran vs Bolivia
Date: Tuesday, 16 October 2018
Kick-Off at 17:00 UK / 18:00 CET
Venue: Azadi Stadium (Teheran).
Iran were in action for the first time since their strong World Cup campaign in Russia. Team Melli saw off Asian rivals Uzbekistan 0-1 away at Milliy Stadium in Tashkent thanks to a goal from substitute Mehdi Torabi midway through the second half.
The head coach Carlos Quieroz practically used the strongest squad possible to tackle Uzbekistan on Thursday. Lokomotiv Moscow’s star man Sardar Azmoun gave up the national team after the World Cup in Russia and he was not called-up for October set of friendlies with Uzbekistan and Bolivia.
Iran were one of the most pleasant surprises of the mentioned World Cup in Russia. They were millimetres away from snatching the massive victory over Portugal and making it to the last 16, but the last group stage game ended in a 1-1 draw leaving Portugal second to Spain in an intriguing Group B. Team Melli looked good against Uzbeks on Thursday. Can they keep the momentum going before the AFC Asian Cup in January and see off the South American opposition in a friendly on Tuesday?
Iran vs Bolivia: Head-to-head
This will be the first ever head to head encounter between Iran and Bolivia.
Iran vs Bolivia: Prediction
La Verde were miles away from snatching their spot at the biggest stage tournament this summer. They finished second from bottom in the South American WC Qualifications snatching 14 points from 18 matches.
They are now led by Cesar Farias who took charge in May this year. He had a poor run of two losses (3-0 to United States and 5-1 to Serbia) and a single draw (0-0 to Korea Republic) at the start of his reign on the bench. Defensive woes continued in September when Bolivians drew 2-2 to Saudi Arabia. They finally took advantage of the easier opposition and defeated Myanmar 0-3 on Thursday. Goals came from Luis Haquin, Marcelo Martins and Leonardo Vaca.
Iran are massive favourites based on everything we saw at the World Cup. Quieroz has the same WC squad available here (except for Sardar Azmoun) and we’d be very surprised to see anything but a comprehensive victory for Team Melli here.
