Ipswich Town vs Birmingham City
England – The Championship
Date: Saturday, 5th August 2017
Kick off at 15:00 UK/16:00 CET
Venue: Portman Road.
Saturday evening offers us an interesting game between 2 evenly matched team which struggled last year. Both teams were involved in relegation battle and Birmingham barely stayed up in the last round.
Ipswich finished 16th last season just 4 points above the danger zone. The team just had too many draws last year which cost them a lot of points. Mic McCarty’s team main weakness last season was finding the net.
The Tractor Boys managed to get just 48 goals for the whole season. Ipswich made a lot of activity during the offseason but the core of the team remains almost the same. They took 2 Cardiff midfielders for free Tom Adeyemi and Emyr Huws.
Still, probably the highest profile buy was 29 year old striker Joe Garner from Scottish side Rangers. He will be expected to be the much needed improvement in terms of scoring goal this season.
Birmingham City barely managed to keep their heads above the water last season. The team ensured their place in the last day of the season with 53 points 2 above Blackburn. They had an atrocious attacking record with just relegated Wigan and Rotherham having scored less goals.
Current manager Harry Redknapp who took charge of the team in April made a lot of activity during the summer. The team let several players depart for free but managed to bring some nice talent to the squad. Craig Gardner who was loaned last season was bought and is officially a Birmingham player while the most expensive signing was defender Marc Roberts from Barnsley. David Stockdale the goalkeeper of last year runner ups Brighton joined for free along with Cheikh N’Doye who departed French side Angers.
Ipswich Town vs Birmingham City: Head to head
Birmingham hasn’t lost from Ipswich in 4 games. They have 2 wins and 2 draws. In the last 10 though things change as Ipswich has 4 victories over the 2 for Birmingham along with 4 draws.
At home Ipswich have drawn the last 2 games with a score of 1-1 and won the previous 2.
Ipswich Town vs Birmingham City: Prediction
Both sides struggled heavily upfront last season. They haven’t made much improvement during the summer break and is likely that they have the same problems this year. Ipswich didn’t look sharp in the pre-season games while Birmingham showed decent play. A drab match is most likely on the cards here with both team playing cautiously. Low to no scoring game looks likely.
Birmingham are looked better in the pre-season playing some higher profile teams and with the new additions the teams looks better prepared for the new season than Ipswich. This points towards hard opener for Ipswich and unlikely loss for Birmingham.
