Iceland vs Romania
Date: Thursday, 8 October 2020
Kick-Off at 19.45 UK
Venue: Laugardals Vollur, Reykjavik.
After a long delay, we are finally about to see EURO Qualifying playoff matches. Iceland welcomes Romania in Path A semi-finals this Thursday, and judging by the odds, we should see a narrow contest.
Just a reminder that everything will be decided on that night in Reykjavik – there is no second match player. In case of a draw we will go into extra-time.
The Vikings are warm favorites for the win at, currently priced at 2.37 odds. They achieved some really good results on European scene in the last couple of years, which can hardly be said for Romania.
Iceland vs Romania Head-to-head
These two teams have met only twice in the past, in season 1996/97 in World Cup Qualifiers.
Romania were more successful in both duels, winning them easily with total goal difference of 8-0. A lot of things have changed since then though.
Iceland vs Romania Prediction
Iceland’s fans are surely not feeling optimistic after losing two games recently. They were defeated by England in UEFA Nations League at this stadium 0-1, followed by unpleasant trip to Belgium and devastating 1-5 loss.
The last friendly game they played was all the way back in January, featuring a narrow 1-0 home win against El Salvador.
Iceland participated in the last World Cup, as well as EURO where they reached the playoffs and eliminated the Three Lions.
A lot of players retired since then though. The current leader on pitch is Birkir Bjarnason, midfielder and member of Brescia.
Unlike the hosts, Romania have had some solid success in their recent UEFA Nations League matches. They drew at home against Northern Ireland 1-1 despite having one man advantage, and defeated Austria on the road surprisingly 3-2 FT.
We are expecting careful approach from both teams and a low scoring affair. Draw seems like the most appealing outcome.
