Honduras vs Costa Rica
2017 CONCACAF Gold Cup
Date: Saturday, 8th July 2017
Kick-off at 2:00 UK/ 3:00 CET
Venue: Red Bull Arena (Harrison).
The Group A at the 2017 CONCACAF Gold Cup comes to life when Honduras take on Costa Rica at the Red Bull Arena on Friday evening. Both teams have a point to prove at this stage, having failed to register a single win during the 2015 campaign.
Honduras can’t wish for a worst form coming into this continental championship with morale sitting at rock bottom due to a five match win-less streak. Their last win in all competitions was in a low-key friendly against Nicaragua. Since then, they drew thrice and lost twice. Defending remains the weakest area and conceded 14 goals during the five match span.
Costa Rica on the other hand, struggled to bag wins in the first half of calender year 2017. They managed just 2 wins from 9 outings since January, but those came against lowly ranked sides like Belize and Trinidad & Tobago. Unlike Honduras, Costa Rica can boast of an experienced and quality side. But somehow things are not coming together in the football pitch.
Honduras vs Costa Rica: Head-to-head
Interestingly, Honduras are unbeaten in the last four matches against Costa Rica with 2 wins and draws each.
Their most recent meeting was on March 2017 for the World Cup qualification fixture which ended in a 1-1 stalemate.
Honduras won all four matches against Costa Rica in the Gold Cup, all of which came in the knockout stages. They met in the quarter finals in 2013, 2011 and 2005 and in the semifinals of 1991 edition.
Honduras vs Costa Rica: Prediction
Costa Rica are definitely the better of the two sides in terms of quality of players and experience. But their current form is nothing less than disappointing. Honduras is also in doldrums with no wins coming in five outings. Their strong head-to-head record could give a much needed psychological advantage, which indeed boost the team morale.
