Germany vs Mexico
Confederations Cup – Semifinal
Date: Thursday, 29th June 2017
Kick-off at 19:00 UK/ 20:00 CET
Venue: Fisht Olympic Stadium (Sochi).
It will be a mouthwatering contest when Germany take on Mexico in the second semifinals of the 2017 Confederations Cup.
Eyebrows were raised when Germany named a young squad for this short tournament. But their performances so far proved that the tinkerman Joachim Low got things spot. By defeating Cameroon by a comfortable 3-1 margin, the World Champions clinched the number one spot in Group B, scoring a total of 7 goals.
Defending may be their weakest area, much of which is contributed by the poor understanding between the players. But, no one can complain about the flair and skill in their midfield and attack.
The win against Cameroon extended Germany’s unbeaten run in all competitions to 13 matches with 10 wins and 3 draws.
Mexico qualified as runner up to Portugal in Group A. Since largely impressing in the 2-2 draw against Portugal on matchday 1, Mexico had to deal with one of two problems in the remaining group games. They had to fight back from a goal down to clinch a 2-1 win against the weakest side in the tournament, New Zealand. The same happened against Russia in the final group game. But, unlike in the win against New Zealand, Russia had clear cut chances to hand Mexico a defeat, which was not taken to full effect.
However, Mexico are coming on the back of a confident run. They were beaten by Croatia in an unofficial friendly earlier in June. But since then, they pulled out 4 wins and 2 draws from six matches. Moreover, their only previous defeat in an official football games was against Chile in the Copa America semifinals.
Germany vs Mexico: Head-to-head
Germany and Mexico locked horns on four previous occasions and the defending World Champions won in all of those contests. Three of those games were in FIFA World Cups. While the most recent one was during the 2005 Confederations Cup, for the third placed play-off.
There was no lack of drama when these teams met at this same competition 12 years back. The match stood at 3-3 at the end of 90 minutes, before a Michel Ballack extra-time goal seal the bronze for Germans.
Germany vs Mexico: Prediction
The 2017 Confederations Cup has been a joy to watch with teams playing without pressure. With two attacking minded teams on the pitch, we could once again expect goals to fall at both ends.
On paper, Germany look like the better side, mainly because of their strong midfield and ability to finish off scoring chances.
