Gent vs Cercle Brugge
Belgian First Division A
Date: Friday, 21 December 2018
Kick-Off at 19:30 UK / 20:30 CET
Venue: GHELAMCO-Arena (Gent).
Gent and Cercle Brugge sit just outside the top six in the Belgian First Division A standings after 19 rounds of the competition. Whilst the visitors have no reasons to be disappointed for such position, the Buffalos clearly expected more before the start of the season.
The hosts, who are three points adrift of Cercle Brugge in the league table, thus have an imperative to finish the year in a victorious fashion. They were so unlucky to lose 2-0 to top-six rivals Sporting Charleroi last weekend. Gent were the superior side on the pitch creating chances and moving forward throughout the entire game, but they went on to lose 2-0 at the end. Both of Charleroi’s goals came in dying minutes of the affair. Can Jess Thorup’s men rebound here against Groen en Zwart?
Gent vs Cercle Brugge: Head-to-head
The Buffalos will rely on the positive head to head record in matches against Cercle Brugge.
They won 19. Drew 6 and lost 9 of 34 encounters against Groen en Zwart.
Gent eased past Cercle Brugge when teams met in early-September this year at the start of the new First Division A season (0-3 at Jan Breydelstadion).
Gent vs Cercle Brugge: Prediction
The visitors shockingly bounced back from two straight losses by beating league heavyweights Anderlecht 2-1 at home last weekend. Laurent Guyot’s squad showed a phenomenal display producing 11 corners and 12 attempts on goal to Anderlecht’s three on the occasion.
Nonetheless, Groen en Zwart generally tend to play much worse on the road where they have a poor record of one win, three draws and five defeats in nine games so far in the league. Cercle Brugge lost four if past five away matches in the competition conceding two or more goals in each of these defeats.
Furthermore, the visitors will be without important midfielder Johanna Omolo who was sent off late in the game against Anderlecht. Thorup has an impressive attacking line-up on disposal and we expect Gent to shine in the final third past Cercle Brugge’s vulnerable defensive line. The home win & BTTS looks to be the way to go here.
