Genoa vs Napoli
2016/17 Italian Serie A.
Date: Wednesday, 21 September 2016
Kick-Off: 19:45 UK,
Venue: Stadio Luigi Ferraris (Genoa).
The dust following round four of the 2016/2017 Serie A season has finally settled – and there’s a new team on top of the table.
It is just a one point gap that divides the no. 1 and no. 2 sides, and these two teams are bound to trade places over and over again as the campaign picks up steam. But for now, Napoli are on top of the league thanks to a 3-1 rout of Bologna, whilst Juventus sit in second after suffering a surprise 2-1 loss to Inter in this weekend’s Derby d’Italia.
Napoli fans surely will want to thank Inter for that result, but they will already have turned their attention towards the team’s next match against Genoa. With Juventus in action simultaneously against Cagliari in what will be a very busy Wednesday across Italy, the Partenopei could make sure they maintain their slender advantage by making it a fourth consecutive Serie A win.
In fact, nothing short of a win will suffice for Maurizio Sarri’s side. A draw with the Grifone, coupled with a win for Juventus will see La Vecchia Signora claim top spot. And Genoa, seeing their perfect start now end, will be keen on throwing a monkey wrench in Napoli’s plans. After having their game with Fiorentina postponed, the Grifone stumbled to a 2-0 loss to Sassuolo – which also marked the first time they were unable to score in the league this season.
It will be very interesting to see how new coach Ivan Juric, who guided former club Crotone into Serie A, will organize his troops to try to pick up at least a point against a free-scoring Napoli.

Genoa vs Napoli: Prediction
Having had way more time to compose themselves, Genoa were expected to pick up where they left off and defeat Sassuolo. After all, the Grifone are not featuring in Europe, and had their tie with Fiorentina end early due to bad weather. However, the hiatus appeared to do more harm than good, as the Neroverdi showed no signs of tiring after their European exploits to hand Genoa their first loss of the season.
Meanwhile, Napoli have had no trouble with scoring. All of their matches this season have seen them score at least twice, and they will be expected to have no problems with doing the same here. Genoa, however, may not have won this tie in over four years, but the Grifone will certainly do their utmost best to cause the Partenopei some concerns. Napoli are not likely to outright lose this game, but securing all three points will be much tougher than expected.
