Fulham vs Sheffield Wednesday
2017/18 EFL Championship
Date: Saturday, 19th August 2017
Kick off at 15:00 UK/16:00 CET
Venue: Craven Cottage.
That’s probably the most anticipated game this round. Fulham and Sheffield are two teams that reached the play-offs last year and will be looking to take an early advantage on Saturday.
Fulham finished in a goalless draw last round against Leeds. Fulham were more active than their opponents but lack of precision in the final third didn’t allow them to score. The team was often getting dispossessed and overall lacked the creativity to break down an organized defensive line.
Sheffield Wednesday also drew their last game. The team hosted Sunderland. The Owls conceded very early after Westwood exited his area and failed to reach the ball. Sunderland droped deeper and Sheffield was in control most of the time. They managed to get an equalizer after wonderful strike from outside the penalty area by Jones.
Form and Tactical Analysis
Fulham were perhaps one of the most exciting sides to watch last season. Sharp and swift Fulham was hitting hard on the counter. This season things changed. Fulham is trying to control the game but fails to break organized defenses. 3 draws in the first 3 games and only 4 goals in them shows a worrying lack of cutting edge in the final third.
Jokanovic is one of the manager with very little formation changes. He uses 4-3-3 with lots of pace on the wings but that gives him troubles when his boys face a well-organized defense with little to no intention of leaving its own half.
Sheffield’s current form is far from the needed to reach their goals. The team has won just 3 points in their 3 games and has a worrying lack of goals. The team was not amongst the high scoring sides last year but this time things are looking worse with just 2 goals in 3 games.
Sheffield plays with a diamond variation of the classic 4-4-2 formation. The team possesses a lot of good strikers but somehow fails to impress up front. We saw a lot of rotation in the striker department but none of the players managed to impress.
Fulham vs Sheffield Wednesday: Head to head
Sheffield has the slight edge in the last 9 games between the sides. They have 4 wins compared to Fulham’s 4.
Last season the games finished 1-1 at Craven cottage and 2-1 for Wednesday in the return fixture.
Last 3 games saw both teams finding the net.
Fulham vs Sheffield Wednesday: Prediction
It will be hard to separate those two teams. Fulham are having troubles against well-organized defenses and Sheffield has one of the best in this department. Despite their defense Wednesday fails up front and we can hardly see them netting against Fulham. Low scoring affair looks most likely this time.
It looks highly unlikely for both teams to go all out on attacking in this game. Teams will try to be cautious while studying their opposition. The first half has a good chance not to see a goal.
