French Guiana vs Canada
2017 CONCACAF Gold Cup
Date: Saturday, 8th July 2017
Kick-off at 0:00 UK/ 1:00 CET
Venue: Red Bull Arena (Harrison).
The 2017 edition of the CONCACAF Gold Cup kick-off when French Guiana lock horns with Canada at the Red Bull Arena in Harrison, New Jersey.
French Guiana national football team are positioned at 120 in FIFA rankings and they are making their first ever appearance at the Gold Cup. This is achieved by securing a third place at the 2017 Caribbean Cup hosted in the country earlier this year.
So, this is the first time ever this tiny nation is playing in a big stage. Inexperience will be a problem, but the inclusion of former France and Chelsea international Florent Malouda will be a confidence booster. He is still going strong at the age of 37, having made 24 appearances for the Indian Super League franchise Delhi Dynamos.
On the other hand, Canada are a regular at the Gold Cups and this will be their 10 appearance at the tournament. Their best run was in 2000 when they were crowned the Champions. Since then, they managed to make it out of the group phase just twice in 8 attempts.
It remained to be seen if the Canucks will benefit from the success of Canadian clubs in the MLS. They have some quality players in Tosaint Ricketts and Jonathan Osario from Toronto FC, while Anthony Jackson-Hamel and Patrice Bernier were instrumental in Montreal Impact’s sucess last season.
However, the biggest news is the addition of the 16-year old Alphonso Davies, who made 21 appearances for Vancouver Whitecaps since 2016.
