High-flying Freiburg are looking for their way back to Europa League when they face a relegation favorite Paderborn on Saturday.
Freiburg vs Paderborn: Match Preview
Nils Petersen overtook Joachim Löw and entered the Freiburg’s history books as their top scorer when he scored his 84th goal, helping the Black Forest club to get back into the European places with a 2-1-win v Mainz.
Following two seasons of merciless fight for their lives, Freiburg is finally back where they were in 2016, as they once again push for European glory lead by phenomenal Nils Petersen and at 7th, they hold the last ticket for paradise.
While they did get most of their points away from Schwarzwald-Stadion, one should not underestimate Christian Streich and his team; four wins and two draws from eight home games this season, with only Koln and Bayern Munich beating them, both of them thanks to extra time goals.
After a disastrous start to their first season back in the Bundesliga, The Blues of Paderborn finally started to pick up much desired points in December, ending the year on a high after getting the better off Frankfurt but enter 2020 , they seems back to their old self as Leverkusen reset them to factory settings in 1-4 win.
Despite being dead last, there’s still hope for our unlucky underdog; relegation play off is five points away, with Mainz and safety one step behind and with sixteen more rounds to go, the magician of Paderborn, Steffen Baumgart, still have time to turn things around.
The Blues aren’t the absolute worst when it comes to games on the road (that honor belong to Fortuna) but they’re close second. Five points won from eight games but with notable improvements lately; they had Dortmund on the ropes, won against fellow struggler Werder and got narrowly beaten by Monchengladbach.
Christian Streich has almost full squad at his disposal though Lukas Kübler, Yoric Ravet and Robin Koch are considered uncertain for Saturday.
Dennis Srbeny and Babacar Gueye are out for Paderborn but there’s a possibility that Jamilu Collins might miss Freiburg trip due to illness.

Freiburg vs Paderborn: Prediction
Freiburg is a tenacious, sinewy beast when they’re at their home ground. Before Bayern got the better of them in mid-December, their unbeaten run lasted nearly four months. With that in mind, adding Paderborn’s far from great record on the road, sprinkled with h2h record, Streich’s men could and should end up winning this.
And while I wholeheartedly expect them to win this, it won’t be with an enormous margin. With the exception of Bayern and Dortmund, their home games aren’t usually that exciting (by German standards), there’s not a lot of those insane scorelines and I expect of them to keep it that way.
