France vs Ireland
Euro 2016 – Round of 16
Date: Sunday, June 26, 2016,
Kick-off: 14:00 UK Time
Venue: Parc Olympic Lyonnais (Lyon).
France and Republic of Ireland will face off against each for the round of 16 tie of the 2016 edition of European Championship.
France were unbeaten in the group stage of the Euro 2016 championship, having won Romania 2-0 in their opening game, they also defeated Albania by 2-0 before sharing the spoils with Switzerland in their final day. They now hope to continue their unbeaten run against Ireland on Sunday afternoon.
Ireland were among four best 3rd placed teams that qualified for the knock-out stages, they drew their first game of the tournament against Sweden, later they were humiliated by Belgium before snatching a lone goal victory against Italy in their final game to reach the final 16.
France: Team News
Didier Deschamps will be at guilty of heavily rotating his squad in the three group games. They cannot afford any slips and Deschamps is expected to field the strongest possible eleven. Pogba, Griezmann and Payet are all expected to start in a 4-3-3 formation on Sunday.
France: Predicted Line-up (4-3-3)
Lloris – Sagna, Rami, Kolscielny, Evra – Sissoko, Cabaye, Pogba – Payet, Greizmann, Giroud.
Ireland: Team News
Stoke City striker Jonathan Walters is the only player missing for Ireland through the injury he picked up in the opening group game against Sweden. Martin O’Neill is expected to start with the same line-up that performed admirably in the 1-0 win against Italy on Wednesday.
Ireland: Predicted Line-up (4-4-2)
Randolph – Coleman, Duffy, Keogh, Ward – Hendrick, McCarthy, Brady, McClean – Murphy, Long.
France vs Ireland: Head to Head Stats
Games between these 2 teams have always been a tough one, they have played 16 previous games. Five of those meetings games ended in draws; France won 7 games while Ireland had won 4.
France are unbeaten in 5 of their last 6 ties with Ireland, they won 3 and drawn 2; while losing just once.
The last five games between these two teams have not seen above 1 goal. Also two of those games had ended in 0-0 stale mates; while the remaining 3 have ended in 1-0 victories.
France vs Ireland: Prediction
France are huge favourites in this game considering the quality of players in their squad and their unbeaten record in the group stage. However, Ireland are no pushovers as they fought hard to get themselves to this stage of the tournament and they are not going to give up easily.
The Irish team may adopt a defensive style to try to holdout till the final minute and go into penalties as that may be their easiest route to quarter final stage.
I predict a hard fought victory for the French side with a 1-0 score line at the end of 90 minutes to be precise.
1. Under 2.5 goals
2. Half Time draw
3. France clean sheet
