France are favorites to beat Australia in the Group C opener of the 2018 FIFA World Cup and a one-sided high scoring game is on the cards.

France vs Australia Match Preview

After missing out narrowly on Euro 2016 title, France will be determined to mount a title challenge at the 2018 edition of the FIFA World Cup. The team has a talented pool of players, probably the best since 1998, however they are far from being called as an invincible team.

The Les Bleus dropped their heads a couple of times in the recent friendlies, the 1-1 draw against USA and a 2-3 loss to Colombia after leading by 2 goals expose the vulnerabilities of this team.

On the other hand, Australia made it to the World Cups for the fourth time on the row, but they had a turbulent qualifying campaign in Asian zone where serious competition is far and few. They had to go through the play-offs and become the 31st team to book their tickets to Russia.

Bert van Marwijk soon replaced Ange Postecoglou as the head-coach and Dutch man steadied the ship somewhat. A goal-less draw against Colombia followed by the 4-0 thrashing of Czech Republic and 2-1 win against Hungary are morale boosting results ahead of the major show down.

France Team News

Didier Deschamps had to leave out a number of players who could have walked in to any other side. Laurent Koscielny and Dimitri Payet are the unlucky ones to miss out with injuries.

While Alexandre Lacazette, Layvin Kurzawa, Moussa Sissoko, Kingsley Coman, Lucas Digne, Adrien Rabiot and Anthony Martial are the ones left out.

Barcelona’s Ousmane Dembélé and Chelsea’s Olivier Giroud found a place in the plane to Russia despite making few performances for their respective clubs.

Benjamin Mendy, who was sidelined with an injury for majority of the season with Manchester City has made into the squad as well.

France Predicted Starting Line-up (4-3-3)

Lloris – Sidibe, Varane, Umtiti, Medy – Kante, Pogba, Matuidi – Griezmann, Mbappe, Giroud.

Australia Team News

Bert van Marwijk has no injury concerns and is likely to call up on familiar names for the group opener.

We can also confirm that Tomi Juric is back in training after the injury layoff and is fit enough to start on Friday.

Fans around the world will be eagerly waiting to see the 19 year old Daniel Arzani in action at some point, the teenager coming after a wonderful season with Melbourne City.

It will be interesting to see if Marwijk goes with his preferred 4-3-3 formation or a conservative 4-4-1-1, vary of the attacking threat from the French trio.

Australia Predicted Starting Line-up (4-3-3)

Ryan – Behich, Sainsbury, Jurman, Risdon – Luongo, Mooy, Rogic – Leckie, Juric, Kruse.

France vs Australia Head-to-head

The teams met three time so far and France are unbeaten with 2 wins and 1 draw.

Their last meeting was in 2013 in a friendly and the Les Bleus run rout with a 6-0 win. Olivier Giroud scored two in that comfortable win.

France vs Australia Predictions

Without a doubt, this is a huge mismatch on paper and Australia certainly lack the required resources to challenge at this level. Bert van Marwijk, the group opener is all about damage control to stay in the run for round of 16 qualification. For me, the Socceroos are the weakest among the four sides in Group C. This match couldn’t end up in anything less than a comfortable French win.

Coming into the goal markets, France scored at least twice in 7 consecutive matches before the 1-1 draw against USA in their last friendly. However, they conceded in 5 of their last 6. Australia are also in some fine scoring form as well and netted in 7 of their last 9 games. Therefore, both teams to score come in as a value bet for this match.
