Fiorentina vs Genoa
Italian Serie A
Date: Sunday, 29 January 2017
Kick-Off: 14:00 UK / 15:00 CET
Venue: Stadio Artemio Franchi (Florence).
After seeing their Coppa Italia campaign end midweek, Fiorentina will have to re-focus on securing European football as they take on Genoa at the Stadio Artemio Franchi on Sunday afternoon.
The Viola have not had the best of seasons, and whilst they are still featuring in this season’s Europa League, the Coppa represented their only realistic chance at silverware. Paulo Sousa’s side now have to try to ensure they can secure a top six – preferably a top five – spot in order to be able to feature in one of Europe’s competitions next season. And the way things are going for the Gigliati, for whom consistency still continues to elude, qualifying for the Europa League obviously is looking clearly like their primary objective.
A major part of Fiorentina’s woes is their defensive frailities. At the start of the season, they were not scoring in high numbers, but they were not conceding, either. At the start of the season, they managed to keep four consecutive clean sheets at the Stadio Artemio Franchi. Then came a shocking goal against Crotone and a game that they nearly lost in rather embarrassing fashion. Since then, the Gigliati have shipped at least one goal in their past six games at this ground and have conceded in all but two of their last 12 across all competitions.
Still, they will come into this game having secured back-to-back wins against Juventus, and most recently, Chievo. During their most recent game against the Flying Donkeys, they earned a clean sheet in a resounding 3-0 victory. Their upcoming opponents, Genoa have been shockingly poor since the end of last year, and this year does not appear to be giving Ivan Juric’s side any respite so far.
Like Fiorentina, the Grifone have also beaten Juventus at their own home ground. But that will seem like a lifetime ago. They became the first team to concede four against Palermo this season as the Rosanero earned a rare victory in a 4-3 thriller. And they arrive in Florence having lost four out of their past five games. Genoa also barely survived to hang on for a draw against Crotone in what surely would have been an absolute embarrassment for them in front of their home fans.

Fiorentina vs Genoa: Prediction
Genoa have lost their past four away fixtures and Fiorentina are in better form. But the hosts still have not solved their leaky defense. That could give Genoa a chance to nick a goal.
Nonetheless, the Grifone have been quite poor as of late, and nearly ended up losing a fifth straight game against relegation candidates Crotone. They are not in a good moment right now, and that is something Fiorentina need to take advantage of in order to keep their European qualifying ambitions firmly on track.
