England vs South Africa
Cricket World Cup 2019
Date: 30 May 2019, Thursday
Start: 10:30 UK
Venue: The Oval (London).
There is a real buzz around this England national Cricket team when they open the ICC World Cup 2019 campaign against South Africa.
Eoin Morgan led side is coming into the tournament on the back of an excellent home record and this is the reason why they qualify are favorites to win the tournament. The team that don sky blues colors at this edition lost just 4 of the 37 matches played at home since 2016.
One of the other reasons for England to see as overwhelming favorites is the firepower in their batting department. They do look like a side that can post 340-360 overtime they go to bat first.
However, I do not see the Three Lions as a complete side as their bowling is only in the thereabouts.
South Africa are clear contenders to make it to the top four, yet they may have some hiccups on the way. The team have the services of some seasoned veterans, yet consistency is a big issue.
Batting is their biggest worry, and we must wait and how Amla, Du Plessis and JP Duminy take fair share of responsibility in the absence of De Villiers.
Bowling is arguably South Africa’s biggest strength; however, their preparations have been marred by injuries to the likes of Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi and Dale Steyn. Both Rabada and Ngidi are fit to stake a claim in the starting line-up for Thursday, however Steyn is a few days away from attaining full match fitness.
From sporting perspective, I see this as a battle between English batsmen and South African pacers.
England vs South Africa Previous Meetings, Head-to-head & Key Stats
The teams met 6 times in the World Cups, and the teams share 3 wins each.
They didn’t face each other at the 2015 event.
Their latest meeting in 2011 was a low scored with all 20 wickets falling and England escaped with a narrow 4 runs victory.
South Africa lost all the three series formats in their latest visit to England in 2017. (2-1 ODI, 3-1 tests, 2-1 T20).
The ODI series of 2017 ended 2-1 in favor of the hosts, with the first two games registering run galore.
England team news vs South Africa
Eoin Morgan have a fully fit squad to choose from and changes are hardly expected to the side that run rout against Pakistan in the recent odi series.
However, there is a selection headache since Mark Wood got back to full fitness. It will be a toss-up between him and Liam Plunkett to fill the second seamers slot.
Jofra Archer who don the t20 series around the world must find his spot here, so do the hardworking spin duo of Adil Rashid and Moeen Ali.
England Predicted Starting XI against South Africa
1 Jason Roy, 2 Jonny Bairstow, 3 Joe Root, 4/5/6/7 Eoin Morgan/ Jos Buttler/ Ben Stokes/ Moeen Ali, 8 Chris Woakes, 9 Adil Rashid, 10 Jofra Archer, 11 Liam Plunkett.
South Africa team news vs England
The Proteas have major worries in the bowling department with Steyn ruled out with injury, while Kasingo Rabada and Lungi Ngidi had little match practice since recovering. Yet, the two young seamers are most certain to start here.
This also means Andile Phehlukwayo finds his name in the team sheet, while the second allrounder spot is most likely to go with Chris Morris ahead of Dwayne Pretorius.
The experienced Hashim Amla and Quinton de Kock are expected to open the batting with captain Faf du Plessis coming in at number three. The middle order is completed by the trio Duminy, van Dussen and Miller; all three batsmen needing some runs to cement their place in the later stage of the tournament.

England vs South Africa Predictions
Since it is the opening day of a big tournament, pressure will be more on England since they must produce a strong performance and live up to the favorite’s tag. Good thing for them is the match is played at their own backyard under familiar conditions.
With a strong home record on their side, I cannot look beyond anything less than an English win to win in the first match of ICC World Cup Cricket 2019; which is priced at around 1.45 odd by most bookies. It is a decent price considering their consistency in posting and chasing down scores above 300.
This bring you to our second option, if England elect or send to bat first, go for team total over 300 for over 1.90 odd.
