The Eagles are itching to get back on the winning track as they welcome surprise hit of the league at Commerzbank-Arena in Monday’s Bundesliga clash.

Eintracht Frankfurt vs Union Berlin: Match Preview

It was another memorable European Thursday night at the Commerzbank-Arena as Daichi Kamada netted three times, helping Eintracht Frankfurt beat FC Salzburg 4-1 in the first leg of their UEFA Europa League round of 32 tie.

That was confidence booster Adi Hütter’s men needed as they’ve come into this duel low on morale following a trashing Dortmund gave them last Friday; it was a loss to end Frankfurt’s terrific five-game unbeaten run (four wins in there) and put a dent in their EL qualification through Bundesliga as the Eagles now sit at 10th, with a colossal eight points separating them from their heart’s desires.

Frankfurt went through a dark, two month period during November and December at Commerzbank-Arena but come New Year, they seem back to their old self; two victories in front of their own fans, huge scalp of the Red Bulls and 5-0 decimation of Augsburg.

The Iron Ones proved a tough nut to crack last Saturday; Christian Gentner and Marius Bülter struck for 1. FC Union Berlin but ultimately it wasn’t enough as Urs Fischer’s team went down 2-3 at home to Bayer Leverkusen.

Union surprised everyone this year and I’ll never get tired of saying that. How did a small side that sneaked in the Bundesliga, with such little amount of investment managed to climb up to 12th place, leaving behind much more experienced and (on paper) better teams?

Well, it’s not that big of a mystery, answer is superb performances in front of their own fans, I was just hyperbolic.

Their form away from Stadion An der Alten Försterei would be a worry, with only eight points gathered from eleven travels but the Iron Ones ended their winless run on travels two weeks ago by picking apart wobbly Werder so they’re coming into this matchup with a huge load lifted off their chests…

Now, injuries… For Eintracht, Gelson Fernandes, Nils Stendera, Lucas Torró, Marco Russ and Bas Dost are sure absentees for Monday night clash with Mijat Gacinovic going down the wire; his illness isn’t serious so it’s up to Her Adi to decide whether to use him or not.

Urs Fischer has more problems, selection wise as Christopher Trimmel, Michael Parensen, Joshua Mees, Laurenz Dehl and Akaki Gogia all unavailable for trip to Frankfurt while the jury’s still out on Manuel Schmiedebach, Lennard Maloney and Suleiman Abdullahi.

Eintracht Frankfurt vs Union Berlin: Head-to-head (h2h)

  • Overall Stats (8 games): Eintracht Frankfurt 5 wins, 3 draws, 1. FC Union Berlin 0 wins.
  • Eintracht have 1-2-0 record at home versus the Iron Ones.
  • The Eagles got the better of Union in a 1-2 win back in Berlin last September.
  • Eintracht are currently on a three-game winning run versus team from the capital.
  • The Iron Ones aren’t as tough when they face the Eagles, as they’ve conceded at least a goal in their last three encounters.

Frankfurt vs Union Berlin: Prediction

Games involving teams still fighting European battles are oftentimes tough to predict but in Eintracht’s case, with their advancement to the next stage all but secured, that shouldn’t be a case.

There’s still hope for them to qualify for Europa League through Bundesliga and while’s that on the horizon, the Eagles won’t give up. They definitely have the quality to see off less-than-inspiring Union (on the road, at home they’re superb), this situation, two games per week, isn’t unknown to them so I think points are staying at Commerzbank-Arena.

And while I don’t see Union getting anything from this game, they can definitely chuck one in. The Iron Ones more often than not failed to get points during the travels, but they usually end up scoring a goal or two.

With the exception of their last trip to Dortmund, Fischer’s men have netted at least a goal in previous five outings and against less than stellar defense of Frankfurt, they might as well do it again.
