Eintracht Frankfurt vs Chelsea
UEFA Europa League
Date: Thursday, 2 May 2019
Kick-Off 20:00 UK / 21:00 CET
Venue: Commerzbank-Arena (Frankfurt am Main).
Chelsea will face a strong test on Thursday night when they travel to Commerzbank-Arena for the first leg of the Europa League semi-final against Eintracht Frankfurt. Both teams sit 4th in their respective divisions and both will come into this off the back of two successive draws.
The Eagles are still three points adrift of Borussia Monchengladbach and Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga ladder, in spite of slip-ups against Wolfsburg and Hertha BSC in past two rounds.
The head coach Adi Hutter has reasons to be satisfied with his men’s recent defensive displays as Frankfurt shipped just one goal in past three games across competitions. The streak began with a 2-0 victory over Portuguese heavyweights Benfica in the return fixture of their Europa League quarter-final tie at Commerzbank-Arena.
Eintracht Frankfurt vs Chelsea: Head-to-head
This will be the first official head to head encounter between the two outfits.
They played each other in a pre-season friendly nine years ago when Eintracht Frankfurt claimed a 2-1 victory.
Eintracht Frankfurt vs Chelsea: Prediction
Chelsea’s defensive line was much less reliable in recent weeks. The Blues allowed three goals to Slavia Prague (a 4-3 victory), two to Burnley (a 2-2 draw) and one to out-of-form Manchester United (a 1-1 draw).
Maurizio Sarri’s men took just two points from past three league rounds, but they still sit 4th in the standings thanks to a series of slip-ups from Man United and Arsenal (their biggest challengers for the top-four finish).
However, Chelsea kept their net untouched in four of last five Europa League outings which is something Sarri’s troops will be looking to build on coming into this tie.
Frankfurt also kept three clean sheets in past four matches in the competition. We have to say the Eagles had a much more complicated route to the semi-final as they went past the likes of Shakhtar Donetsk, Inter Milan and Benfica.
Frankfurt’s highly-improved defensive line will be a big challenge for out-of-form Chelsea here. We recognize a huge value in backing the hosts to keep a clean sheet at 3.50 odds. You can also go with the home win at 2.75.
