Dortmund welcomes struggling rivals Schalke to Signal Iduna Park in what might turn out to be the most one-sided Ruhr Derby in recent times.
Read our Prediction and Match Preview for Borussia Dortmund vs Schalke German Bundesliga clash on 16th May 2020, Saturday, scheduled to kick off at 14:30 UK/ 15:30 CET at the Rhein-Neckar-Arena (Sinsheim).
Full focus back to Bundesliga, after Dortmund failed to hold on to a first leg 2-1 lead over PSG in the UEFA Champions League round of 16, eliminated with the 2-0 defeat in Paris. This happened to be the last time they took the football field before the lockdown and they were on a 5-match winning run across all competitions till then.
Back on the home front, with another win in Borussen derby against Gladbach, the Yellows of Dortmund pushed RB Leipzig down to third and now are Bayern’s closest competitors for the Meisterschale, with four points dividing two German giants.
Borussia’s terrific 2020 form is still a thing, with Lucien Favre’s men getting their fourth consecutive win, eight in nine league games this year; in front of their Yellow Wall, Der BVB are still undefeated, boasting more than an impressive record of nine wins and three draws and on a 4-game winning streak since that ridiculous 3-3 tie v Leipzig.
The Royal Blues under former Huddersfield boss David Wagner impressed many with their flamboyant football in the first half of 2019/20 season. Things haven’t gone well for the Gelsenkirchen outfit in 2020 with the team failing to win a single Bundesliga game since they edged Monchengladbach 2-0 on January 17th.
They put a good show against Hoffenheim on matchday 25, but sadly Weston McKennie’s goal wasn’t enough for all three points during last Saturday’s clash against Hoffenheim as Christoph Baumgartner’s second-half goal meant that the two sides had to share the points in the Veltins Arena.
On the road, the Blues remain winless since November and trip over to one of the worst sides in the league, making that six outings from which their fans travelled back with their heads down with the most recent case being one of the most shameful ones as Wagner’s men laid their weapons in Cologne, losing 3-0.

Team News & Expected Starting Eleven
Lucien Favre will miss some key players for this clash, yet his squad have enough depth to compensate.
Marco Reus and Axel Witsel are the prominent name in the nursing table, alongside the winter singing Emre Can.
Meantime, Marcel Schmelzer, Nico Schulz and Dan-Axel Zagadou are doubtful after lacking match fitness.
Dortmund (3-4-3): Burki – Akanji, Hummels, Piszczek – Hakimi, Delaney, Guerreiro, Brandt – Sancho, Hazard, Haaland.
David Wagner have less headache than his opposite number with Omar Mascarell, Benjamin Stambouli and Ozan Kabak being the only players in nursing table.
Schalke (4-3-1-2): Schubert – Oczipka, Nastasic, Todibo, Kenny – Sané, McKennie – Serdar, Harit, Burgstaller – Raman.
Borussia Dortmund vs Schalke: Prediction
This could be just a continuation of their torment as David Wagner’s pupils are still waiting on a win since January and their snatch-and-grab victory over Monchengladbach and it’s wondrous how the Royal Blues kept their sixth place on Bundesliga table so far despite their seven-game winless run.
Having knocked out of the Champions League, Dortmund will now be 100% focused on Bundesliga with title still on shooting range. They will surely take Schalke seriously and make a quick work of injury-ravaged rivals.
One fun thing to notice, pretty much every Dortmund’s defeat this season is followed by a show of force and convincing triumph, with at least four goals scored. Knowing the state of the Royal Blues’ defense, I’d stake my life on history repeating itself.
