Derry City vs Cork City
Irish Premier Division
Date: Friday, 11 May 2018
Kick-Off at 19:45 UK / 20:45 CET
Venue: Brandywell Stadium, Derry.
Rebel Army instantly rebounded from the shocking 3-0 loss away at Shamrock Rovers by beating Limerick 2-1 at home in the previous round. The defending champions are thus once again three points clear off their bitter rivals Dundalk at the very top of the standings and they will be looking to maintain the gap on Friday when they travel to Brandywell Stadium to take on Derry City.
It should by no means be a one-way street for the visitors, though, given they are up against an outfit which sits fourth in the league standing. However, the Candystripes won’t enter the game high on confidence after dropping the ball against the rock-bottomed Bray Wanderers seven days ago.
Kenny Shiels’ side managed to return some confidence on Monday when they destroyed lower-division Shelbourne 7-3 at home in the early stages of the League Cup.
Derry City vs Cork City: Head-to-head
Cork City were the more successful outfit in the history of H2H matches against Derry City.
Rebel Army lead the tie by ten wins ahead of the 81st encounter with the Candystripes.
Interestingly, just one of last four head to head games saw both teams on the scoreline.
The previous clash, played in October last year produced no goals at all.
Derry City vs Cork City: Prediction
The champions look to lack consistency on travels this term. They lost three of last four away games in all competitions and they could struggle to stop the red-hot Aaron McEneff. The midfielder from Northern Ireland bagged as many as eight goals so far in the season, including five in last six games. He should definitely have space to maintain the fine spell of form against Cork’s defense which looked anything but reliable in the last couple of weeks.
This is one of the toughest trips in the league for the champions and we doubt they have what it takes to leave Brandywell Stadium victorious on Friday. Derry City are yet to make a mistake in front of the home crowd where they won seven and drew one of eight games so far in the season. The home win or draw thus looks to be a banker at 1.61, while braver punters can try with the clear home win at 3.10.
