Cyprus and Kazakhstan meet at the Neo GSP Stadium on Wednesday as part of their preparations for the World Cup qualifying campaign set to resume on the weekend.

The Cyprus national football team earned their first win of the ongoing qualification phase for 2018 FIFA World Cup by defeating minnows Gibraltar 3-1 at their home ground. Their head-coach Christakis Christoforou will be a relieved man after seeing his team’s six match losing streak in all competitions come to a halt.

The win give them a slight hope of challenging for their first major tournament. However, it will be a herculean task from a group that contains Belgium, Bosnia and Greece. Cyprus welcome Estonia to home for the next qualification match on coming Friday.

Kazakhstan started their qualification campaign in stunning style by holding Poland to a 2-2 draw at home. Since then, they suffered heavy defeats away from home to Montenegro and Denmark, 5-0 and 4-1 respectively. But their home performances once again gathered attention, after holding Romania to a goal-less draw in-between the two heavy defeats.

However, the Kazaks are win-less in their last five games in all competitions, which also includes a 2-0 defeat against one of the weaker neighbors Kyrgyzstan.

Cyprus vs Kazakhstan: Head-to-head

The lone meeting between the two sides was in a friendly in 2004. Cyprus were hosts during that occasion and won the game 2-1, courtesy of two early first-half goals.

Cyprus vs Kazakhstan: Prediction

This match shouldn’t be a hard one to predict with Kazakhstan having such a poor record while playing outside their home turf. Cyprus are a fairly experienced side and will benefit from having a number of players from top domestic clubs, APOEL Nicosia and AEK Larnaca.
