Crotone vs Palermo
2016/17 Italian Serie A.
Date: Sunday, 18 September 2016
Kick-Off: 14:00 UK,
Venue: Stadio Adriatico (Pescara).
Still rooted to the bottom of the table, Serie A debutants Crotone will be desperate to finally taste victory as they welcome a struggling Palermo to the Stadio Adriatico on Sunday afternoon.
It has been a rough start to life in the top flight for the Squali. Davide Nicola’s men have yet to draw, let alone win a single match and the new coach, who took over from departing Croatian tactician Ivan Juric, is struggling to figure out what should be his best attacking formation. Meanwhile, Crotone’s upcoming opponents Palermo have also endured a horrible start, and have only fared marginally better than the Serie A new-boys.
Palermo, with one point from their first three, are equally as desperate to finally win a game. Roberto De Zerbi will now actually get to coach his team after being banned for the team’s last game, which ended as a 3-0 loss to Napoli. And given that he does work for one of the most eccentric personalities in Italian football – Maurizio Zamparini – De Zerbi is already under a massive amount of pressure to produce.
Last season saw Zamparini fire and re-hire a total of eight different coaches (with some, like Davide Ballardini and Giuseppe Iachini doing more than one stint), and so far De Zerbi is already the second man on the bench. Palermo did look decent for the first 45 against the Partenopei, but suffered an utter collapse once the visitors finally breached their defense immediately after the break.
Concentration appears to be a major problem for the Rosanero, who actually were pretty solid initially against Inter. However, they were unable to lock down all three points and had to settle for a draw – which, to date, happens to be their only point of the nascent campaign.
Crotone vs Palermo: Head-to-head statistics
- This is the first ever meeting between Crotone and Palermo.
- Cagliari are the only other team besides the Squali and the Rosanero to win a Serie A fixture this season.
- Palermo have lost all but one of their past 11 road fixtures.
Crotone vs Palermo: Prediction
Without a single win between them, both Crotone and Palermo will be desperate to lift themselves off the bottom of the table. It’s still early in the season, but do not be surprised if these two are among the sides desperately fighting for survival come the latter stages of this campaign.
Both teams will be caught between two minds – how much to defend, and how much to go forward. Crotone, as the hosts, will want to try to hunker down initially but obviously will have to come out of their bunker if they want to get anything from this game. Meanwhile, Palermo’s suspect defense means that the debutants will have a chance at finding the back of the net. However, in this early relegation dog-fight, goals are likely to be at a premium as neither side will want to initially venture too far out and expose themselves to a counter-attack. A low-scoring draw (i.e. 1-1) is not out of the realm of possibility.
