Crotone vs Chievo
2016/17 Italian Serie A.
Date: Sunday, 30 October 2016
Kick-Off: 14:00 UK,
Venue: Stadio Enzo Scida (Pescara).
If one has been following the current Serie A campaign so far, one arguably cannot help but feel sorry for Crotone. The Squali were literally five or so minutes away from what would have been their first Serie A win against Fiorentina. However, the Viola managed to save themselves from some major embarrassment by equalizing very late in the second half.
As such, the Serie A debutants are still rooted firmly to the bottom of the table, with two points from their first ten matches. It goes without saying that the longer they go without a victory, the slimmer their chances at staying afloat become. At some point, something will have to give. But will they manage that breakthrough against upcoming opponents Chievo?
The Flying Donkeys were once regarded as a huge surprise package this term due to some impressive showings. However things have gone awry and Rolando Maran’s men are now without a win in their last three matches. They have yet to recover following a 3-1 home loss to AC Milan a couple of matchdays back and will be hoping to regroup against the only team yet to win a match this season.
A troubling issue for Chievo is their away performances. They have failed to score in six out of their last eight road fixtures and have shipped over a goal per game in their last eight matches (nine in total). Still, facing the league’s worst-performing side will have them fancying their chances as they attempt to get their affairs in order after three games sans a win.
Crotone vs Chievo: Head-to-head statistics

- Crotone and Chievo have met only once before – in Serie B during the 2000/2001 campaign.
- The Squali lost both fixtures by an aggregate score of five to one.
- Crotone have conceded two or more goals in four out of their last five matches
Crotone vs Chievo: Prediction
Crotone have conceded in every single goal they have played this season. And having shipped a whopping 21 goals (2.1 per match for ten games) they have the second-worst defense in the league. The only team to have fared worse is Cagliari (23), but nine of those have come in their past two matches. The hosts have scored in every single home fixture – although it hasn’t helped much – and so just may be able to do so yet again against Chievo. The result against Fiorentina surely will have been ultimately disappointing after it appeared that their defensive efforts were finally going to pay off. So, their fans will hope the team will take heart from that performance and translate it into trying to get that historic top flight victory this Sunday.
As for Chievo, they will be desperate to get back on track after a bad few weeks. The Flying Donkeys have seen themselves start to slide back down the table, and whilst a mid-table result is not bad, they surely will want to do better than that come this season’s end. Their failure to score on the road, however, is of major concern, but as noted before, Crotone have yet to keep a clean sheet.
If the hosts can repeat their showings for most of the game against Fiorentina, they just may be able to finally end their wait for a win. In any case, Chievo’s bad away form means that Crotone might be able to secure at least one point here.
