The Group C of the Copa America Centenario is arguably the toughest group of the tournament featuring Uruguay, Mexico, Venezuela and Jamaica. Except for Venezuela, the remaining three teams are all high profile teams which has marked the group a Group of death. Many have tipped Uruguay and Mexico as the possible qualifiers from the group into the knockout stages.
With Mexico’s excellent run of form since the the new head coach Osorio took over, they are likely the team to come 1st in group C but then Jamaica can spring up a surprise and overtake Uruguay should they plan their game well as they have the opportunity of playing their first game against the group’s underdogs Venezuela.
Lets see how the teams could possibly end up in the 1st stage of the competition.
Since October 2015 when Juan Osorio became the head coach, El Tri’s have been Superb in form which have led to winning streaks and unbeaten run. Their main scoring threat is from Javier Hernandez Chicharito, they have a sufficient defense, starting from their incredible shot stopper Ochoa, and ready to fight defenders Paul Aguilar, Rafael Marquez, Hector Moreno, and Miguel Layun. Since the Copa America Centenario matches will be held in main land USA the Mexicans will have a huge fan advantage.
Mexico are expected to top the group provided they go past their biggest worries Uruguay who turns out to be their 1st opponent, Jamaica will also pose a threat to them but not as big as Uruguay.
Group Prediction: 1st
Key Player: Javier Hernandez (Bayer Leverkusen)
The Reggae boys had an automatic qualification to this tournament as the winners of the Caribbean Cup, but they are in a tough group as they will be facing Venezuela, Mexico who beat them in the finals of CONCACAF Gold cup and Uruguay. Jamaica’s 1st game have given them a slight advantage as they are playing Venezuela who are seen as the underdogs of the group and a win against them with a draw from the remaining two games will push them to the knockout stages of the Copa America Centenario depending on the result of Mexico vs Uruguay.
The disadvantage for the Caribbean giants will be their second game against Mexico at Rose Bowl in Pasadena, which is a known haven for Mexican fans.
Key Player: Wes Morgan (Leicester City).
Uruguay are seen as one of the tough teams in this tournament and many have tipped them to get to the finals of the Copa America Centenario, but i see otherwise. The absence of their front man Luis Suarez have dealt a huge blow to the team coupled with their recent poor form. Though they still have enough fire power upfront with Edinson Cavani and also a capable defense with the presence of Diego Godin and Alvaro Periera. They wont be as much threat as they would be if when Suarez is playing. Hope is not lost as the front man is expected to return during knock-out stages, but that’s if they happen to go to through the group stages.
Key players: Edinson Cavani (PSG)
Venezuela’s chances of qualifying from the group stages is slim with their extreme poor run of form winning a single game in this tournament would be a miracle. Though they might spring up surprises with the presence of some stars in their team like Josef Martinez of Torino, West Brom’s Salomon Rondon, Genoa’s Rincon and Roberto Rosales of Malaga but nothing much is expected from the team.
Key Player: Salomon Rondon (West Brom)
