Club Brugge vs Sporting Charleroi
Belgium – First Division A
Date: Sunday, 4 February 2018
Kick-Off at 17:00 UK
Venue: Jan Breydelstadion (Brugge).
Club Brugge have had an impeccable campaign so far in the season, but they are looking to close the worst week of the campaign this weekend when they host Sporting Charleroi in the Matchday’s derby. The hosts come into this as massive favourites being 11 points clear at the top of the league ladder, but the head coach Ivan Leko will have a huge challenge to raise the spirits in the dressing room after the table-toppers lost two on the bounce within three days shipping as many as six goals in the process.
The first of the failures (the third defeat of the season) came seven days ago when FCB fell 2-0 away at Gent conceding two late second-half goals. Whereas that defeat could have been afforded due to the massive edge at the top of the standings, the mid-week’s 4-1 loss at Standard Liege is definitely a sign for alarm bells to ring at Jan Breydelstadion.
Leko’s side did reveal defensive holes at the start of the year conceding two goals to Antwerp and KV Oostende each, but nobody believed the sovereign First Division A leaders could suffer such a humiliating defeat. It will be very interesting to see how the players will react against the strong opposition on Sunday.
The Zebras are one of the most pleasant surprised of the season as they sit second past all the heavyweights in Belgian football. Nonetheless, the team led by Felice Mazzu played much better in the first part of the season and they will head into this after claiming just a single point from last two league ties against the likes of AS Eupen and Antwerp.
Club Brugge vs Sporting Charleroi: Head-to-head
The two teams met each other just three weeks ago in the Belgian Cup when Club Brugge demolished their rivals 5-1 at home to advance with ease into the next round.
FCB have won four and drawn one of last five meetings with the Zebras.
Club Brugge have won 19 and lost only 2 of 24 home encounters against Sporting Charleroi.
Club Brugge vs Sporting Charleroi: Prediction
We believe that Ivan Leko’s side has the strength to bounce back from a tough away loss in mid-week.
Club Brugge have been impeccable at home so far in the season and they will head into this off the back of 13 consecutive wins at Jan Breydelstadion.
We could be in for a high-scoring affair given that Club Brugge have scored three or more goals in each of last seven home games in First Division A. Additionally, they’ve bagged five in the recent cup tie against the same opposition in mid-January.
