Club Brugge vs Salzburg
UEFA Europa League
Date: Thursday, 14 February 2019
Kick-Off at 20:00 UK / 21:00 CET
Venue: Jan Breydelstadion (Brugge).
Last year semi-finalists Salzburg were impeccable in Group B winning the maximum 18 points from six matches against the likes of Celtic, RB Leipzig and Rosenborg. The Bulls thus once again confirmed quality at this level and they certainly come into the R32 tie against Belgian champions Club Brugge as favourites to advance over two legs. Can the hosts at least make the job more difficult for Austrian champions in the first leg at their Jan Breydelstadion?
It has not been the best of domestic campaigns for Ivan Leko and his men so far in the season. They will hardly defend the Belgian silverware being nine points shy of leaders Genk after 25 rounds in First Division A. They slipped up at the weekend playing only a 2-2 draw away at Cercle Brugge, their second consecutive draw in the league.
Club Brugge vs Salzburg: Head-to-head
This will be the first ever head to head encounter between the two teams.
Club Brugge vs Salzburg: Prediction
The visitors are cruising their way towards sixth consecutive title in Austrian Bundesliga. They are 14 points clear off LASK after 18 rounds and can entirely focus on another deep Europa League run. They showed strength netting 17 goals in six group phase affairs (almost three per game).
Salzburg have three men who scored four or more goals so far in the competition in their ranks. Munas Dabbur is the most lethal of them all with nine goals in 18 Bundesliga appearances and six in Europa League as well.
Israeli forward certainly has what it takes to exploit Club Brugge’s obvious defensive holes. The hosts conceded three goals in last two domestic games. They did show decent defensive form in Champions League conceding only five goals in six matches, though. It’s an impressive record if we know the opposition included the likes of Borussia Dortmund, Atletico Madrid and Monaco.
You should thus be careful with the stakes, but we still believe the visitors have much more quality in their ranks and we’ll go with the away win at 2.15.
