China vs Thailand
Date: Thursday, 21 March 2019
Kick-Off at 11:35 UK / 12:35 CET
Venue: Guangxi Sports Center Stadium (Nanning).
China and Thailand will open the third edition of an international football tournament China Cup in the first semi-final scheduled for Thursday afternoon at Guangxi Sports Center Stadium in Nanning. It will be the replay of recent last 16 round tie at the Asian Cup when Team Dragon picked up a 1-2 victory after a second-half comeback.
China were then eliminated by Iran (0-3) in the quarter-final. It was the last game in charge of Marcelo Lippi, but Team Dragon have a familiar name on the bench now as well since Lippi’s fellow countryman Fabio Cannavaro became the new head coach.
The clash with Thailand will mark his debut on the bench and there are no doubts local players will be highly motivated to give their best and prove the new manager they have what it takes to feature the starting line-up in following national team actions.
China vs Thailand: Head-to-head
These two sides met each other six times so far and China lead the tie by one win.
Team Dragon were much more successful in the most recent set of head to head affairs as they won each of past three meetings with Thailand conceding only one goal in the process.
China bagged at least two goals in each of past three outings against Changsuek.
China vs Thailand: Prediction
Thailand claimed second place in their respective Asian Cup group in January this year. They lost 1-4 to India in the opening fixture, but bounced back with a 1-0 win over Bahrain and a 1-1 draw to group winners UAE later on.
Thailand’s players come mainly from domestic league as they only have three likes who play in Japanese football (just one in Japanese top-flight). All of Cannavaro’s called-up players feature Chinese Super League which is way stronger than the elite tier of Thailand’s football.
China should have no troubles winning this one with ease. They have the head to head tradition, quality and home crowd on their side and we would be very surprised to see anything other but a comprehensive home win as the outcome here.
