Chile vs Germany
2017 Confederations Cup Final
Date: Sunday, 2nd July 2017
Kick-off at 19:00 UK/ 20:00 CET
Venue: Krestovsky Stadium (Saint Petersburg).
Arguably, Germany has the most talented players among the current footballing nations. Joachim Low’s decision to bring a young squad to the Confederations Cup has done wonders. The head-coach is now certain that there are plenty of replacements available for some of the established veterans in the squad, which also brings in a healthy competition within the squad.
Against Mexico in the semifinals, Germany were lethal in finishing. The midfield won crucial duels giving the opponents very few scoring chances. However, they were still unable to avoid one or two individual errors in their back-line.
The win against Mexico extended Germany’s unbeaten streak to 14 matches in all competitions. Since losing out to France in the Euro 2016 semifinals, the team has picked up 11 wins and 3 draws. They also scored 42 goals during the period, averaging exactly 3 goals per game.
Chile needed the lucky lotto of penalty shootout to see-off Portugal in the semifinals. The Latin American champions were clearly the underdogs in the duel, but they showed they have a knack of winning knockout games against the toughest of opponents.
Yet, Chile’s performance in the tournament hasn’t been that convincing. Their poor finishing is the root cause of the problems, having netted 4 goals so far this tournament. This is a poor return considering the high number of chances they created in each game.
Chile vs Germany: Head-to-head
Germany are unbeaten in the 5 games played against Chile so far. The group game in the current competition ended in a 1-1 draw. The previous four were all won by Germany, three of which coming at the FIFA World Cups.
Chile vs Germany: Prediction
Once again, Germany look like the stronger and settled side among the two. But as we mentioned in the semifnals, Chile are a dangerous side when it comes to the knockout phase of the international tournaments. They defied the odds against Portugal. And in Germany, they have an inexperienced squad. Therefore, we clearly feel that Chile are slight favourites to win this game, mainly on the back of their mental toughness and experience with players.
