Chile vs Australia
Confederations Cup – Group B
Date: Sunday, 25th June 2017
Kick-off at 16:00 UK/ 17:00 CET
Venue: Otkrytiye Arena (Moscow).
Chile have one foot in the semifinals of the Confederations Cup after the 1-1 draw against Germany on Thursday. The South American Champions sit at the top of the table with 4 points, most importantly a +2 goal difference. The goal-aggregate make it easy for them and a draw against Australia will secure their way to the knockout phase.
The defending Asian Champions are having a horrendous tournament. They were helped by the goal keeping howlers of Bernd Leno in the 3-2 loss against Germany to make the defeat look decent, while they were benefited by some poor finishing from Cameroon to salvage a 1-1 draw.
This might come as no surprise to many experts. The Socceroos are found struggling in games played outside their home soil since a while. There are only 2 wins in their last 8 road trips. And those came against lower ranked sides Bangladesh and UAE.
Chile are renowned for the attacking style of play. They will create a high number of scoring chances in every match. But their finishing is a big let down, unless otherwise you might see a 7-0 score-line, just like they trounced Mexico in the Copa America Centenario tournament last June.
Australia’s main problem is their lack of pace up front, which often help the opposition defense to regroup quickly. Also, their defense can switch off at times.
Chile vs Australia: Head-to-head
Chile are unbeaten in the three meetings against Australia so far, 2 wins and 1 draw.
The most recent meeting was in the group phase of the 2014 World Cup. Alexis Sanchez opened the scoring in the 3-1 win. The veteran Tim Cahill was the one who scored the consolation goal for the Socceroos.
Chile vs Australia: Prediction
There is little to expect from Australia going into this crucial clash. There seems to be a psychological block after a series of poor performances away from home.
Chile cannot afford to lose here as well. Therefore, expect them to take the game to the Socceroos from the kick-off.
