Chievo vs Sassuolo
2016/17 Italian Serie A.
Date: Wednesday, 21 September 2016
Kick-Off: 19:45 UK,
Venue: Stadio Marc’Antonio Bentegodi (Verona).
Fresh off winning this weekend, both Chievo and Sassuolo will be heading into this match with their confidence sky-high. The Flying Donkeys managed to edge out Udinese 2-1 to ensure that they remain in a solid fifth spot, but they will be up against an equally impressive Neroverdi side this Wednesday.
Although Sassuolo suffered a major hiccup after forfeiting a game with Pescara and losing 3-1 to Juventus, Eusebio Di Francesco’s men truly have continued to amaze observers this season. It’s hard to believe that they have managed to do so well without the services of talismanic Domenico Berardi, who is still out due to injury, and more important, remain strong on multiple fronts. Sassuolo are making their first ever foray into European football, and have yet to lose a single game in the Europa League as they made it through two play-off ties before beating Athletic Bilbao in the group stage.
The exertions of their European adventure don’t appear to have taken its toll, as the Neroverdi picked up a 2-0 win over Genoa. They now are hoping to make it three wins across all comps, but Chievo are well known for their fortitude on home turf. Juventus are the only side to have managed to beat them at the Stadio Marc’Antonio Bentegodi since the start of 2016 (by a score of 4-0). In addition, coming from behind – on the road – against Udinese will have elevated their spirits, and Rolando Maran has a full-strength squad available for this game.

Chievo vs Sassuolo: Prediction
Chievo are truly a force to be reckoned with at home, and will not make things easy for Sassuolo. That being said, the Neroverdi are truly a tricky customer, and have steadily built a reputation as a side not to be underestimated. Furthermore, they have shown they are more than ready to mix it up with the big boys; since breaking into the top flight in 2013, they have in fact beaten all of Italy’s big sides.
In any case, this fixture historically has been a low-scoring affair, and Wednesday’s edition, which will be the eighth since their first ever meeting during the 2010/2011 Coppa Italia, will be no different. A 1-1 draw looks good for this one.
