Chievo vs Fiorentina
2016/17 Italian Serie A.
Date: Saturday, 21 January 2017
Kick-Off: 17:00 UK,
Venue: Stadio Marc’Antonio Bentegodi (Verona).
Buoyed by a huge win last weekend, Fiorentina will be hoping this will spark a great run of form as they travel to take on Chievo on Saturday evening.
The Viola picked up an impressive victory over Juventus on Sunday. That marked their first victory over the Bianconeri since October 2013 and potentially helped to blow the Serie A title race back open. However, Paulo Sousa’s men have been quite poor in their travels. They have won only three out of their nine road fixtures, whilst losing five, as opposed to losing zero so far at the Stadio Artemio Franchi. In addition, they have shipped 17 on the road, versus eight on home turf.
However, despite having a far leakier defense away, they also have scored more goals on the road than they have in front of their own home fans. The Viola have in fact netted 17 on their travels, versus 13 at home. But they are currently on a three match losing road streak, having failed to get anything out of games against Inter (4-2), Genoa (1-0), and Lazio (3-1).
Meanwhile, Chievo will come into this game having lost 3-1 to Inter. The Flying Donkeys, however, are solid enough in general at home. Entertaining football isn’t their specialty. Each season, their objective is safety, and once they achieve that, they are happy enough. However, they have lost their past three games, and will be desperate to get back on track as they have not lost four in a row in over two years. Currently, they have earned 25 points, meaning they need about 15 more to get to that so-called magical number of 40 to guarantee they will stay in the top flight for next season.
The Flying Donkeys have scored in the overwhelming majority of their home fixtures, and given Fiorentina’s bad defending, especially on the road, one can expect them to do likewise on Saturday. Still, beating the Viola outright could be tough, as they have only won two out of their last 12 Serie A home ties against Fiorentina and haven’t defeated them at this ground in over five years.

Chievo vs Fiorentina: Prediction
Fiorentina will be full of confidence after getting the better of Juventus. Any team surely would be, especially considering that the Bianconeri are the reigning Scudetto champs. That surely will lift any side’s spirits. Meanwhile, Rolando Maran will need his side to pick themselves up as they hope to earn their first victory since mid-December. Losing 3-1 to Inter will have been another huge blow, but Chievo aren’t anywhere in danger of relegation just yet. Their home form is quite solid, despite their struggles, whilst Fiorentina, as noted, still have not hit full stride.
This game should see goals on both ends. All in all, the Viola will want to try to push to pick up another win here, but it won’t be easy. The Flying Donkeys like to dig in and hunker down at home and could pose a stern test, and with striker Nikola Kalinic reportedly on his way to China, it could be tricky. Still, the visitors just may be able to do enough to earn at least a point.
