Chelsea vs Huddersfield Town
English Premier League
Date: Wednesday, 9 May 2018
Kick-Off at 19:45 UK / 20:45 CET
Venue: Stamford Bridge, London.
Chelsea’s hopes of making it to the Champions League next year are still alive thanks to a narrow and hardly-fought 1-0 victory over Liverpool on Sunday afternoon at Stamford Bridge. It was Olivier Giroud’s header what made the difference between the two heavyweights who are now separated by just three points in the battle for the top-four finish. The Blues also have a game in hand on Liverpool, meaning mid-week’s win over the Terriers would move Conte’s side lock on points with the Reds entering the final day.
However, the Italian manager and his lads will need to be super careful here knowing they are up against an outfit which held the newly-crowned champions Manchester City to a goalless draw on Sunday at Etihad Stadium. David Wagner’s men thus took a highly-important point which puts them in a good position ahead of the final two games of the campaign. Nonetheless, the schedule does not quite work well for the German manager and his men who have to play the likes of Chelsea and Arsenal in the remaining two fixtures.
Chelsea vs Huddersfield Town: Head-to-head
Interestingly, it’s Huddersfield who lead the head to head stats by one win, but most of 5 previous games were played well over 40 years ago.
The most recent history strongly belongs to the Blues who have won each of last three meetings with the Terriers since 20067.
This term’s Premier League ties saw a 1-3 win for Chelsea at The John Smith’s Stadium.
Interestingly, each of these three matches saw Huddersfield Town scoring at least once.
Chelsea vs Huddersfield Town: Prediction
Wagner’s side struggled badly for consistency over the past couple of months. The Terriers scored just two goals in last eight league games, winning just one of these. They scored one in last four on the road, claiming two points in the process.
We just have to see the hosts as massive favourites knowing they won five on the bounce across competitions. Also, Conte’s lads did not concede a goal in three straight matches, including the mentioned 1-0 win over Liverpool on Sunday.
The standout bet would thus be Chelsea to keep a clean sheet at the 1.61 odds. We do expect the hosts to go string looking for the early breakthrough, but Huddersfield’s defensive line proved out to be quite tough of late, meaning we don’t expect a high-scoring thriller at Stamford Bridge. Under 3.5 goals FT is worth backing at 1.57.
