Cagliari vs Inter Milan
2016/17 Italian Serie A.
Date: Sunday, 5 March 2017
Kick-Off: 14:00 UK,
Venue: Stadio Sant’Elia (Cagliari).
Inter will be looking to get their European qualifying campaign back on track as they travel to face Cagliari on Sunday afternoon.
The Nerazzurri suffered their first home defeat since October as they were beaten 3-1 by Roma in last weekend’s big match. That, coupled with wins for Atalanta and Lazio, has seen Stefano Pioli’s side tumble out of the top five spots and they will need a win to get back into the race.
Interestingly, Cagliari was the last team to beat Inter at home before last weekend’s defeat to the Giallorossi. The Rossoblu finally ended their horrible away record with a win against Crotone, which further moved them away from the relegation zone. Despite their overall struggles, Cagliari are a whopping 16 points away from 18th placed Palermo and in fact, are just outside the top ten.
Given that Cagliari have failed to keep clean sheets in their last 22 Serie A games, this is something that Inter can use to their advantage after shipping three against Roma last round. The Nerazzurri have failed to score in just two games since Pioli arrived – against Juventus and Napoli – and those are two top three sides.
Although the Rossoblu have only lost one of their last eight Serie A games against Inter, they have only won one of their last six home Serie A ties versus the Nerazzurri. With AC Milan knocking at the door, Inter will need to get back to winning ways, especially as the loss to Roma saw them fail to take advantage of Napoli’s shock defeat to Atalanta last weekend.

Cagliari vs Inter Milan: Prediction
We’re now getting into the home stretch, and the race for a Europa League spot looks to be contested between Lazio, AC Milan, Inter, and surprise packages Atalanta. That being said, the Nerazzurri must gather themselves and re-focus. Losing to Roma was tough, but they will be up against a team that have shipped a whopping 52 goals in just 26 games – making Cagliari’s defense the second worst in the division.
That being said, the Rossoblu will not make things easy. Although they have pretty much already guaranteed safety for next season, they are playing at home and obviously will not want to be like Bologna, who shipped seven against Napoli. Still, Inter boast a far superior side and should be able to grind out a result. Their last five away Serie A games have been decided by one goal, and likely this could be a close one as well.
