Cagliari vs Atalanta
2016/17 Italian Serie A.
Date: Sunday, 18 September 2016
Kick-Off: 14:00 UK,
Venue: Stadio Sant’Elia (Cagliari).
Cagliari will be desperate to pick up a win as they welcome Atalanta, but La Dea are feeling a spot of confidence after their own good result from round three.
The Rossoblu are back in the top flight after being promoted from Serie B, but unless if they manage to improve, they will find themselves back in the second tier. Thankfully, the new season is still young and there are many more rounds left to play. Nonetheless, if one is a Cagliari fan, it’s not exactly the kind of start any supporter would want to see, and a sense of desperation must surely be creeping in when they realize that they will have to take on Juventus in a few days’ time.
Facing the reigning Serie A champions, of course, is certainly enough to demoralize any struggling side, and as such Cagliari will need all the confidence-boost they can get before that game. Complicating matters for the hosts is the absence of first-choice shot-stopper Marco Storari will be suspended for this match, whilst Artur Ionita is still on the treatment table.
Meanwhile, the hosts will be coming into this game having earned a hard-fought win over Torino – albeit they will surely be thanking Joe Hart. The English shot-stopper, on loan with the Granata from Manchester City, committed a baffling gaffe to gift La Dea with the game winner on a debut to forget for him. From an Atalanta perspective, of course, three points are three points, and they surely will take a win any way they can get.
Franck Kessie has been especially bright for the side in what has otherwise been a disappointing start, with four goals in three matches so far. The Ivorian midfielder, earmarked as the “new Yaya Toure” has really impressed new coach Gian Piero Gasperini despite being just 19 years of age. Given that he apparently nearly joined Sunderland instead, it goes without saying that Atalanta fans are surely pleased he ended up in Italy. And they will be hoping to see him continue in this same vein of form to help the team’s fortunes over the course of this campaign.

Cagliari vs Atalanta: Prediction
Cagliari have struggled so far, and they have not experienced good results against Atalanta in their past few meetings. In addition, the Rossoblu have conceded at least two goals in their past four games. Still, La Dea have shipped at least two goals in five out of their last six away games, and moreover, as noted before, they have struggled on the road, with just one win in 12 fixtures.
Cagliari have seen over 2.5 goals in 11 out of their past 13 home fixtures, and Atalanta have seen the same result in their past five road fixtures. So it’s highly likely that the same will happen on Sunday.
Neither side are clean-sheet specialists and have failed to do so in their first three games. Expect a free-flowing affair in which goals will be scored on both ends, but Cagliari should be able to make their home pitch advantage count in order to eke out a narrow win.
