Burton Albion vs Cardiff City
England – The Championship
Date: Saturday, 5th August 2017
Kick off at 15:00 UK/16:00 CET
Venue: Pirelli Stadium.
Burton head into another campaign on this level of competition. The team was one of the favourites to go down last season but proved the bookies wrong. The visitor Cardiff though have higher ambition and may spoil the opener for the home fans.
Burton managed to scrape their survival last year. The drop was inevitable according to most experts but they have been proven wrong and Burton survived with 1 point over Blackburn. The Brewers had a decent run in the end of the season which ensured the survival.
Nigel Clough managed to keep hold of his main players in the summer and the core of the team is relatively the same. The team ensured though the signature of a few players to bolster the squad depth. They snapped up veteran left back Stephen Warnock and Jake Buxton from relegated Wigan. Luke Murphy also joined the team on a season long loan from Leeds United. The only signing which actually cost a transfer fee was Liam Boyce who joined from Scottish outfit Ross County.
He will be heavily depended upon to score goals with his 24 in 40 games for Ross County last season. The team didn’t have the best of pre seasons as apart from the victory over Leicester the other results were disappointing showing that the team might not be completely ready for the new season.
Cardiff finished in a safe mid-table position last year. The team caused trouble to some of the bigger teams but overall they finished were they deserved. Their form was a bit inconsistent and the performances in front of home crowd could use some improvement.
Neil Warnock took some steps in the summer to improve his squad. First of all no key players left the club and the core along with the manager are the same. Second the teams strike force was boosted by the addition of 2 familiar names. Relegated Rotherham striker Danny Ward joined the team along with Bristol City’s Lee Tomlin. The duo combined scored 18 goals last year and it will be interesting to see how they connect in their new team.
Warnock is an experienced manager who is capable of extracting the best out of his new arrivals so the team looks prepared and ready to kick off the new season.
