Bristol City vs Barnsley
England – The Championship
Date: Saturday, 5th August 2017
Kick off at 15:00 UK/16:00 CET
Venue: Ashton Gate.
Two teams that were involved in relegation battle at some points of the last season are taking on each other with hopes for a good start. Ashton Gate is the arena which will host the battle between Bristol City and Barnsley.
Bristol City actually finished below their current opponents last year. The team led by former Barnsley manager Lee Johnson who managed to keep his team above the drop last season. He took charge of the team in early February taking the team in an atrocious form. The Robbins have got just 2 victories in 17 games at that period and the young manager had to step in and improve drastically.
Still the change didn’t come overnight as the team was winless in the first 7 games he was in charge. His first victory came away against Wigan followed by an impressive 4-0 win over Huddersfield. From that point on the team never looked like relegation threatened.
They were a team capable of scoring against any opponent last season but things at the back were not looking rosy. 66 goals conceded is simply too much to compensate and that is an issue that needs addressing. Nathan Baker a central defender from Aston Villa joined the ranks to try and help with that problem.
But, the main transfer activity was up front as striker Lee Tomlin left the club to join Cardiff and to be replaced by Angers regular Famara Diedhiu. There are high expectations over the costly signing and it remains to be seen if the player will live up to them.
Barnsley finished 14th last season and produced a number of entertaining high scoring games. Their attack looked sharp but at the back they were conceding too many and too often. The team had a huge slump of form around New Year which put its place in the league under doubt. The players managed to pick themselves up though and with a strong run in the end secured a mid-table finish.
The team was left by several important figures in the summer. The most notable is central defender Marc Roberts who had a key presence in the heart of the defensive line. The defender left a void in the defensive line after departing for Birmingham. There were a few defensive additions to the squad but they are hardly going to fill the void. Liam Lindsey, Jason McCarthy and Ethan Pinnock are all defenders but they need time to adjust and may lack the necessary quality to compensate for Roberts leave.
The pre-season results suggest that the team not just couldn’t improve at the back but things are looking even worse. Getting 4 goals in a game against last years rock bottom Rotherham doesn’t look like any kind of improvement.
