Brighton vs Chelsea
English Premier League
Monday, 14 September 2020
Kick-off 20:15 UK/ 21:15 CET
Venue: Amex Stadium (Brighton).
Timo Werner’s Premier League debut on focus when Chelsea kick-start their 2020/21 campaign away at Brighton & Hove Albion.
Finished 4th last season, the Blues were busy in the transfer market and reinforced the team with some young exciting talents.
The acquisitions of Thiago Silva, Timo Werner, Kai Havertz & Hakim Ziyech along with Ben Chilwell shows the vision Lampard have for the club and it seems like they are not done yet.
Rennes’ Edouard Mendy is also expected to join the Blues and give tough competition to Kepa Arrizabalaga and Willy Caballero in goal.
Brighton survived relegation for a second consecutive season and there is little change in their squad over the summer with Adam Lallana being the only major summer arrival. Meantime, the likes of Anthony Knockaert, Aaron Mooy and Martin Montoya left the club.
Judging by the look of how other teams are staking up for the new season, Brighton are way behind and I would essentially consider them as relegation candidates.
Brighton vs Chelsea Head-to-head
Chelsea are unbeaten in the 6 Premier League meetings with Brighton since the Seagulls earned promotion for 2017/18 season – 5 wins & 1 draw.
The draw for Brighton happened in their most recent meeting 1-1 FT, at this stadium after losing 1-2 and 0-4 in the previous two home games.
The Asian handicap win for Chelsea is seen in 4 of their 6 overall PL meetings, however this happened only once in 3 visits to the Amex Stadium.
On matchday 1 last season, Chelsea were crushed 4-0 at Old Trafford, while Brighton bagged an impressive 3-0 away win at Wolves before going downhill from there.
Brighton vs Chelsea Team News and Predicted Starting Line-up
Graham Potter have a fully fit squad at his disposal and there are no changes expected what we saw them last season.
Brighton Predicted Line-up (4-2-3-1)
Mat Ryan – Burn, Dunk, White, Veltman – Propper, Bissouma – Trossard, Lallana, Gross – Maupay.
Meantime, Lampard travel to the Amex without several key players including 3 summer arrivals – Ziyech, Silva and Chilwell.
Among other high profile absentees are Christian Pulisic and César Azpilicueta lacking fitness and Mateo Kovacic suspended after the red card in last season’s FA Cip final.
Good news for the fans, both Timo Werner and Kai Havertz are expected to start here.
Chelsea Predicted Starting Line-up (4-2-3-)
Arrizabalaga – Alonso, Rudiger, Zouma, James – Jorginho, Kante – Hudson-Odoi, Mason Mount, Havertz – Werner.
Brighton vs Chelsea Prediction
It seems like Frank Lampard has ticked all the boxes and this squad on paper looks good to challenge for the Premier League title.
Another reason for my assessment is that now they have quality players fighting for every position.
So, expect an impressive performance from whatever starting eleven Lampard go with on matchday 1.
To their aid comes Brighton’s inability to win games and they are left with 1 win from the last 9 at the Amex.
Chelsea to win priced at 1.61 odd offers great value and I consider this as the top pick for Monday. Note that they are unbeaten in last 6 against the Seagulls (5w,1d).
On top of that, Chelsea’s last 7 away games across all competitions saw over 2.5 goals regardless of the ft result. The over 2.5 goals for Monday’s match is offered ayt 1.80 odd, a decent shot considering Brighton’s 6 of 8 matches against teams finished in top 4 saw the same.
