Kick-off: 17:00 UK.
Venue: Maracana Stadium (Rio de Janeiro).
The last year’s losing finalists Brazil meet Honduras in the first semi-final of the men’s Olympic Football 2016 at Rio on Wednesday evening.
Brazil had never won the Olympics Gold medal in men’s football event were runners-up on three occasions – 2012, 1998 and 1994. They were beaten by Mexico in last year’s final, despite naming a squad with a number of start players.
They started this year’s tournament in unconvincing fashion drawing blanks against Iraq and South Africa in the first two group games. They came to life in the final group match against Denmark defeating them 4-0. The Seleccao were drawn against a strong Colombian side in the quarter finals, but eased to a 2-0 win to book their place in the semifinals.
Honduras are making their fourth appearance in the Olympics football competition and their best achievement is the quarter final appearance in the 2012 London Olympics. It was Brazil who eliminated Honduras in the last edition in a thrilling encounter that finished 3-2 after 90 minutes.
The Central Americans started their group phase with a 3-2 win over Algeria, but lost to Portugal 1-2 in their second match. They eventually hold South American powerhouse Argentina to a 1-1 draw to book the date with South Korea in the quarter finals. A goal from Alberth Elias was enough to see off the Asian giants for their first ever semi-final appearance at Olympics men’s football.
Brazil vs Honduras: Head-to-Head
They met in the Quarter-finals of 2012 London Olympics which resulted in a thrilling 3-2 win for the Brazilians.
Honduras surrendered the lead twice and once Brazil took the lead they held on to guarantee progress to the semi-finals. Neymark was on the score-sheet through a 50th minute penalty goal. But Leandro Damiao was the start of the show with two goals.
Brazil vs Honduras: Prediction
There will be no shortage of confidence in the Honduras camp after the 1-0 win against South Korea in the quarter-final fixture. The Koreans were unarguably one of the toughest opposition in the competition. However, the route to semi-final will not be easy and the Central Americans are huge underdogs here.
Brazil started the tournament in a nervy fashion, but have improved with every match and finally started to look more like a team. With Neymar ending his goal drought in the tournament against Colombia, the Selecao will have their noses in front. Moreover, the Latin Americans have plenty of quality in their squad and the experience of playing at top level.
A victory for Brazil is expected inside the regulated 90 minutes, but this one wont be easy for them by any means. This match could also see over 2.5 goals, considering the playing style of both teams.
Full Time Correct Score Prediction: Brazil 2-1 Honduras.
