Botic van de Zandschulp vs Daniil Medvedev
Third Round – Australian Open
Date: Saturday, 22 January 2022
Medvedev overcame a tough challenge in the Second Round to keep his streak going. Pitted against local boy Nick Kyrgios, who also happens to be a giant-killer, the Russian had to toil hard to secure the win.
But he did, and now the reigning US Open champion seems more confident about his chances in Melbourne.
In the Third Round, he has drawn a comparatively lighter opponent – Botic Zandschulp. The 26-year-old Dutch player received a walkover to this phase, after his opponent Richard Gasquet was retired hurt mid-way through their Second Round fixture.
Zandschulp will try his best to bring the Russian down, but he is clearly fish out of water here. Only once has he taken part in the Australian Open – in 2021, when he crashed out in the First Round itself.
Moreover, his only game against Medvedev had ended in a loss as well.
By the looks of things, expect Daniil Medvedev to deliver a win this weekend.
Botic van de Zandschulp vs Daniil Medvedev Head-to-head (h2h)
- The only match-up between the two had ended in a 3-1 win for Daniil. The final scorecard read 6-3, 6-0, 4-6, 7-5.
Botic van de Zandschulp vs Daniil Medvedev Prediction & Analysis
Medvedev had won 35 of his last 40 games, and two of the total five losses during this stretch had come against Djokovic, and Zverev – two of the best players in the world.
As of now, the Russian seems in great form, and will be hugely motivated to go after the title after overcoming Kyrgios in the Second Round. Moreover, the absence of Djokovic is an added bonus. The Serb had defeated him in the Final the last year.
Going on, Daniil also has a perfect h2h record against Zandschulp.
Furthermore, Botic had lost three of his past six games. This is also his fifth ever appearance in a Grand Slam competition, and his inexperience will likely cost him a lot. Note that this is going to be only the 34th match in his career.
Do also note that in his only clash against the Daniil earlier, he had dropped a set 0-6.
As things stand, expect the second-ranked Medvedev to deliver another routine win this Saturday, and progress to the Fourth Round.
