SL Benfica vs Zenit St. Petersburg: Prediction
Having dropped 0-2 lead in extra time at Leipzig, The Eagles lost all hope to qualify for Champions League Last 16.
Currently sitting last in Group G, even Europa League is an uncertainty for them. They will qualify if they beat Zenit by a score line better than 3-1 and Lyon do not lose or if they just win and Lyon lose to Leipzig.
Their only win came at Estádio da Luz, having beaten Lyon 3-1. Only other game in front of their crowd they’ve lost 1-2 v CL newbie RB Leipzig.
Zenit is 2nd, having picked up four points from their first two games. Their good form didn’t last as they were then beaten twice by Leipzig.
But they overcame Lyon 2-0 in St Petersburg and sit on the verge of qualifying. Guests are sure passengers for Knockouts if they win in Portugal though they can get away with a draw if Lyon fail to beat Leipzig. If both games are drawn, the Russians are through due to their head-to-head superiority over Lyon.
André Almeida and David Tavares are sidelined for The Eagles while Haris Seferović is questionable.
Malcolm is out for Zenit, as are Andrei Lunev and Yuri Zhirkov. Season is over for Emanuel Mammana, who suffered a cruciate knee ligament injury.
I’m hesitant to recommend Zenit to win since they’re on an eleven-game winless streak away from home in European matches.
But since it’s all-or-nothing for Benfica, that might open some space for Dzyuba & friends. Both teams to score is a good bet.
I’d also try Half with most goals: 2nd half. Last four meetings of these teams had most of the goals scored in second half and considering importance of this game, first half might be standoffish while most of the action happens after the break.
