Benfica vs Porto
Portuguese Primeira Liga
Date: Sunday, 7 October 2018
Kick-Off at 17:30 UK 18:30 CET
Venue: Estadio da Luz (Lisbon).

A real buzz is expected in and around Estadio da Luz on Sunday when Benfica and Porto are set to take on each other in the biggest match Portuguese football has to offer. The top two teams from the previous term of Primeira Liga will enter the new O Classico in high spirits following wins in their respective Champions League outings in mid-week.

The Eagles managed to survive a stern AEK Athens test, beating the Greek hopefuls in a five-goal thriller. Things looked to have slipped out of Benfica’s hands when AEK notched an equalizer at the moment the Portuguese runners-up were one man short (Ruben Dias got sent off just before the half time). However, Rui Vitoria’s men showed a phenomenal spirit to bag the match-winner 16 minutes from time through Alfa Semedo and hold on to the lead until the very end of the game.

Benfica vs Porto: Head-to-head

Porto have a positive head to head record in last 57 meetings with the Eagles.

The Dragons won 29, drew 14 and lost 14 against Benfica so far.

It is interesting to note that none of past four O Classicos saw three or more goals scored.

Benfica failed to find the back of the net in two last term meetings with the Dragons (0-0 and 0-1).

Benfica vs Porto: Prediction

Porto also had to work hard to secure their maiden Champions League victory. It was Moussa Marega who broke the deadlock four minutes after the interval to secure an important three-pointer against Turkish champions Galatasaray at Dragao.

It was the third consecutive clean sheet victory for Sergio Conceicao’s lads who are a single point shy of Braga at the top of the Primeira Liga standings. Benfica sit third being a point short of fierce rivals Porto.

Conceicao has a deadly attacking line-up with the likes of Marega, Brahimi, Corona, Aboubakar (though his appearance is under question here). Given Benfica were very easy to break down of late, we see Porto as a team closer to snatching the spoils in the derby. You can back the Dragons not to lose at 1.57 odds.

Also, since the Eagles did not score a goal in last two derbies against Porto, we will alternatively back the visitors to keep a clean sheet at the 3.50 odds.

Benfica vs Porto: Bet Tips

  • Porto or Draw @ 1.57 (4/7)
  • Porto to keep a clean sheet @ 3.50 (5/2).
