Red Star Belgrade vs Floriana
UEFA Europa League Qualification
Date: Thursday, 29th June 2017
Kick-off at 19:30 UK / 20:30 CET
Venue: Stadion Rajko Mitic, Belgrade.
Serbian Super League runner-up Red Star Belgrade welcome Floriana in the first qualifying round for UEFA Europa League season 2017/18. The second leg will be played a week later on Malta.
Red Star Belgrade (FK Crvena Zvezda)
This match-up is all about the hosts. Crvena Zvezda had the vastly disappointing ending of the domestic league when they dropped the title to their arch-rivals, FK Partizan. However, Red Star is approaching the upcoming UEFA challenge with utmost seriousness despite they are heavy favorites.
Without a doubt, UEFA Europa League group stage is the destination for the Serbian side. However, it will be far from easy. The players didn’t have enough time to rest, few standard players left. Until today, Richmond Boakye’s stay in Belgrade was under the question mark. Luckily, he will sign another contract so Red Star won’t have any striker headaches ahead of the upcoming season.
Also, FK Crvena Zvezda signed Brazilian Ze Marcos and they will attempt to pair him with his countrymen Marquinhos. If they sign, they will certainly need some time to click.
Without a doubt, the Maltese squad is an underdog ahead of the clash at ‘Marakana’ stadium. The visitors haven’t participated in UEFA qualifications since 2012. Their five-year absence came after the 12-0 aggregate defeat by Elfsborg. Prior to the tie with the Swede, Floriana faced AEK Larnaca who beat them 9-0 on aggregate.
Red Star Belgrade vs Floriana: Head-to-head
It’s clear that Floriana’s chances are more than slim. Regardless of the favorite title, Red Star Belgrade must be cautioned, especially after last season’s clash with Valetta. In the first match on Malta, Serbian team barely survived despite they won 1-2.
Their defense was poor, and they are on the relatively same level as the previous season. Back then, FK Crvena Zvezda were more than happy that Falcone’s second goal for Valetta was unjustly disallowed. Later on, in that match, Red Star secured the victory through Aleksandar Katai’s individual brilliance who was the best player in Serbian Super League back in season 2015/16.
The scenario in the second leg against Valetta was similar to the one from the first. Valetta managed to score in Belgrade which was a huge concern for Crvena Zvezda. They won with the same result of 2-1.
Red Star Belgrade vs Floriana: Prediction
The Serbs have probably learned from their past mistakes – underestimating Maltese side is a bad idea. The players are still on vacations in their heads, but as professionals, they will probably find the focus and qualify for the next round after the upcoming clash in Belgrade.
