Man United midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger has been handed three-match ban for elbowing West Ham player Wiston Reid. The German international accepted the charges by the FA and the ban will begin with immediate effect.
The ban came after the German was caught on Camera elbowing Wiston Reid’s throat when the duo were jostling for a first half free-kick build up.
Center referee Mark Clattenburg did not see the incident and he just asked the two to calm down and that scene was not mentioned in his match report.
Man United were held to a goalless draw by the Hammers and the footage from the incident was handed over to a panel of three former elite referees. This was reviewed independently of one another before a unanimous decision was taken.
Wiston Reid was unhappy about the incident and he said after the match: “He knows what he’s done – he’s elbowed me in the face.”
The Hammers manager Slaven Bilic also agreed to Reid’s call: It’s a clear red card – a straight red without any doubts”.
“It was a moment of madness. He deserved to be sent off, but the referee told me he didn’t see it. Fair enough, I believe it. It was an elbow.”
Therefore the Man United midfielder will have to sit out for his side’s games against Bournemouth, Norwich City and Stoke City.
