Bastia vs Marseille
French Ligue 1
Date: Wednesday, 21st December 2016
Kick off at 19:50 UK Time
Venue: Stade Armand Cesari.
We have to give all he respect to Bastia to go to a team like Rennes who had not lost at home all season and come away with a 2-1 victory. Okay so they were outplayed and hardly had the ball but they got the most important stat: goals. Bastia were 2-0 up in that game and did have 14 goal attempts and gave their all.
Coach Francois Ciccolini adapted the club to a diamond formation, effectively putting six players at the back and Bastia defended valiantly enough with just one up front. It was a classic display of counter attack that ended Rennes hopes and gave Bastia just their second away win of the season.
Ciccolini has been working on formation after Monaco’s 5-0 win over his side and now Bastia has won their last two games to put them in 12th position and four points clear of the bottom three.
Bastia’s home record isn’t the best with just 3 games won from their 9 matches however a succession of draws has meant the club haven’t tasted defeat at Stade Armand Cesari since October 15th when they were beaten by Angers 2-1.
Marseille won what could be said as a routine game over Lille by 2-0. But that win meant the club have hit their sweetest period of the season. Four games unbeaten and have won 3 of those in a row. Away from home they still have problems, their last game was won at Dijon but that is the only one from 9 matches played.
Bastia vs Marseille: Head to Head Stats
From the last 7 games played at Bastia, Marseille has won 2 of those but have recorded no victories in the last 4 years. Home and away over the last 10 games Bastia has just 1 victory, though that came in their last meeting which was in April this year where Bastia won 2-1 at this ground. The last 6 games has seen 3 goals or more on 4 occasions or 70%.
Bastia vs Marseille: Prediction
This is a very interesting tie because both teams come into this match with a lot of confidence. This brings goals, possibly not an avalanche but usually at least one for each club. Both teams to score should be our main bet for this event. Bafetimbi Gomis for Marseille and Eric Crivelli for Bastia have been in good form but we will pick Crivelli for the home side to get a goal for small stakes.
