Sunderland visits Oakwell in search of another 3 points. Both teams so far are having tough times in the league and will be looking for a positive outcome.
Barnsley lost to newcomers Sheffield United last round. The game was rather nervy with both teams getting plenty of cards. The outcome was decided after 17 minutes when Billy Sharp met a low cross into the penalty area and scored for the final score of 1-0.
Sunderland got stunned last game. The team played Leeds United at home and was supposed to get something out of the game. Well it didn’t work as The Black Cats lost to United with 0-2 letting a goal in each half.
Form and Tactical Analysis
Barnsley currently have just 3 points from their opening 4 geames. The team Suffered defeats on the road against Sheffield United and Bristol City along with a hom defeat to Ipswich. The only point came from a home soil victory over Nottingham with 2-1.
Barnsley plays with a lone striker in the face of Tom Bradshow in a 4-1-4-1 formation benefiting from the width this formation gives. Still the team sometimes looks to be too fond to attack and players often forget to track back. This leads to unnecessary opportunities for the opposition.
After departing from the Premier League Sunderland were expected to fight their way back into the top flight. Still the team is far from impressive this season and has onl y 5 points. 2 draws against strong opponents like Wednesday and Derby and a victory away against Norwich. All these games along with the loss to Leeds were against tough opponents but the team show a worrying lack of consistency.
Sunderland plays a typical 4-4-2 with Grabban and James Vaughan leading the attack. The team is also very dependent on the runs of experienced winger McGEady on the left and Honeyman on the right. They’re the ones to support the team with width.
Barnsley vs Sunderland: Head to head
Just 2 games between the sides and they were played back in the 2006-07 campaign.
Both games finished 2-0 for Sunderland.
Barnsley vs Sunderland: Prediction
Both teams here need the points. Sunderland is the better team but they still look to inconsistent. Barnsley are obviously the underdogs here but with home advantage and Sunderland’s problems they may get something out of this. Barnsley have scored in 4 of their last 5 games in all competitions while Sunderland only failed to score against Leeds in their last 6 in all competitions. The two zeros are looking unlikely here.
Sunderland is the better team with more ambition. They cannot fail again as the gap between them and the top will widen. Despite their struggles Sunderland are still the favourites here.
