Barcelona vs Real Madrid
Spanish La Liga
Date: Sunday, 6th May 2018
Kick-off at 19:45 UK/ 20:45 CET
Venue: Camp Nou (Barcelona).
Bragging rights to bag on Sunday when Barcelona and Real Madrid go head-to-head in the biggest football showdown in the World.
Both teams are coming on the back of some success in the past days as Barcelona won the La Liga title and Madrid made into the Champions League final for the 5th time in 6 seasons.
There are also political controversies surrounding the game since this is the first Clasico post Catalan Independence movement in October. Moving to the football aspects, Zinedine Zidane already confirmed that they will not perform the traditional guard of honour for their Catalan rivals.
This time, it is not Messi and Ronaldo the ones in focus. Instead it is Andres Iniesta who will make his last Clasico appearance. The veteran Spanish midfielder made 37 appearances against Real Madrid in various competitions.
Still, you cannot take Messi and Ronaldo out of the limelight since the Pichichi is there to be won. Messi is leading the race with 32 goals this season and Ronaldo may not get near to this as he is on 24 goals. Suarez could overtake the Portuguese maestro as he is on 23 La Liga goals.
Now, Barcelona haven’t won a Clasico at home since 2015. They lost 2 of the last 3 at Camp Nou and drew 1. A victory on Sunday will be important for them as they look to finish the league season unbeaten.
Team News and Predicted Line-up
- Barcelona have a fully fit squad at their disposal and most of their star players are expected to be in the starting eleven.
- Dani Carvajal and Isco are the two players sidelined with injuries for the Los Blancos.
- It will be Lucas Vazques getting the node to do the duties at the right back ahead of natural full-back Achraf Hakimi and Nacho.
Barcelona vs Real Madrid Head-to-head
A pair of Supercopa de Espana clashes and a La Liga meeting in December make it three meetings between the sides this season. Madrid bagged the Super Cup with 3-1 win at Camp Nou and 2-1 win at their own turf. But, Barcelona proved their might with a comfortable 3-0 win in their latest league meeting at Santiago Bernabeu.
But seriously, home advantage played little role in recent Clasico fixtures. There is only 1 home win in their last 7 meetings, away team won 5 and drawn 1.
Thus, Barcelona are chasing their first home win in 4 attempts having lost 1-3 in the Super Cup at the start of the season and a 1-1 draw and 1-2 defeat in the previous two La Liga matches against the Los Blancos.
Barcelona vs Real Madrid Prediction
We can expect a better competitive game on Sunday than what happened in their first league meeting at Bernabeu in December. As mentioned earlier, home advantage rarely play a role in their battles and therefore this won’t be a cake walk for Barcelona.
Real’s weaknesses in defense are well documented, but we often fail to see that the same are present with Barcelona as well. So, we can easily expect a game filled with goals. For me, they are even favorites to win this one, and they will be separated only if one of the two star men at either side considerably lift their performance on Sunday.
