Augsburg vs Wolfsburg Prediction, Betting Tips and Match Preview with h2h stats, form guide, team news and starting line-ups for German Bundesliga clash on 16th May 2020, Saturday, scheduled to kick off at 14:30 UK/ 15:30 CET at the WWK Arena, Augsburg.
Augsburg are looking for a fresh start following a change of managers, hoping to secure their top tier survival but they will not have it easy when they welcome Europa League contenders Wolfsburg in Saturday’s Bundesliga skirmish.
The Match Preview
After a strong first-half performance, Augsburg were beaten 2-0 by Bayern Munich which forced struggling Bundesliga club to fire Martin Schmidt as coach on Monday in a bid to ensure survival, with Heiko Herrlich stepping in.
Maybe it was a premature decision but one can argue that it was well deserved, as Augsburg slipped down to table, currently residing at 14th, five points off first team below the line, having lost seven of their last nine games with most of them played against top half sides and crème de la crème of German football.
In front of their own fans, the Fuggerstadter managed respectable results albeit unimpressive record of 5-3-4, stuttering a bit in recent times. But they had Dortmund on the ropes before the Norwegian wonderkid run rout in the 3-5 demolition. Prior to that they triumphed over wobbly Werder 2-1 and drew with EL chasing Freiburg and held their own but ultimately lost in their last outing against Monchengladbach (2-3).
Wolfsburg’s last completed competitive game is the UEFA Europa League clash against Shakhtar Donetsk, resulted in 2-1 defeat at home, which was held behind closed doors due to coronavirus.
Back home, the Wolves strung together an impressive six-game unbeaten run and pleasantry reminded their fans of what are they capable of, bringing back memories of nearly perfect opening to the season. This streak got them back in the fight for Europa League, something deemed nearly impossible just month and so ago, but things are looking much brighter from 7th place, just a point off Schalke at 6th.
After being contained for good part of the year, 2020 brought us some new Wolves, bolder and hungrier as they went on a three-game unbeaten run on the road following an opening defeat against Koln with Gisdol’s men going all gung ho, without a single care for defense which nearly cost them during their latest trip to Berlin but they’ve pulled back from 2-0 down to earn a deserved point and extend their streak just a little bit.
Team News & Predicted Line-up
Heiko Herrlich will be without Fabian Giefer and Julian Schieber for this clash with loads of players regaining their fitness during covid-lockdown.
Andreas Luthe could keep his place in goal ahead of Tomas Koubek, after the later deem to concede too many soft goals.
The new manager could prefer a 4-4-2 formation as against the 4-4-1-1 or 4-2-3-1 preferred by his predecessor.
Augsburg (4-4-2): Luthe (GK) – Framberger, Gouweleeuw, Jedvaj, Max – Richter, Khedira, Baier, Vargas – Finnbogason, Niederlechner.
On the other side, Wolfsburg will be without their top goal-scorer Wouter Weghorst, who is suspended for accumulation of yellow cards.
Meantime, Yannick Gerhardt, Josuha Guilavogui and William are injured, while Ignacio Camacho is doubtful.
Renato Steffen, who used to fill in at right back could move into midfield with the return of Kevin Mbabu from injury.
Oliver Glasner started a majority of games with a 4-4-2 formation, which is flexible enough to switch to 4-3-3 or 4-5-1 depending on match situation.
Wolfsburg (4-4-2): Casteels (GK) – Otavio, Brooks, Knoche, Mbabu – Brekalo, Schlager, Arnold, Steffen – Mehmedi, Ginczek.

Augsburg vs Wolfsburg: Prediction
Looking at some of the previous games both of these sides played (at home, away, against each other) and seeing all those scorelines straight ripped straight from video games, one can only hope they’ll continue in the same manner and give us a clash to remember, a far cry from their most recent encounter.
While new manager at the helm is known to have a positive effect on the squad, I’m not sure Herrlich can change things so much with so little time spent with the team. His style and approach are diametrically opposite of one favored by Schmidt and that’s one of the reasons I’m siding with Wolfsburg for this one.
The Wolves know how to play against Augsburg, currently are doing really well in the league and I believe they’ll extend their unbeaten streak for one more game.
