Augsburg are looking for a fresh start following a change of managers, hoping to secure their top tier survival but they won’t have it easy when they welcome Europa League contenders Wolfsburg in Sunday’s Bundesliga skirmish.

Augsburg vs Wolfsburg: Match Preview

After a strong first-half performance, Augsburg were beaten 2-0 by Bayern Munich which forced struggling Bundesliga club to fire Martin Schmidt as coach on Monday in a bid to ensure survival, with Heiko Herrlich stepping in.

Maybe it was a premature decision but one can argue that it was well deserved, as Augsburg slipped down to table, currently residing at 14th, five points off first team below the line, having lost seven of their last nine games with most of them played against top half sides and crème de la crème of German football.

In front of their own fans, Fuggerstadter managed respectable albeit unimpressive record of 5-3-4, stuttering a bit in recent times but they had Dortmund on the ropes (before Norwegian wonderkid pulled them toward 3-5 comeback), triumphed over wobbly Werder, dropped points against EL chasing Freiburg and held their own but ultimately lost in their last outing against Borussia Monchengladbach (2-3).

Wolfsburg’s players decided not to show up for Thursday’s European clash, committing a mistake after mistake, often times looking lost and disorganized which resulted in 2-1 defeat at home to Shakhtar Donetsk in UEFA Europa League last-16 first leg, which was held behind closed doors due to coronavirus.

Back home, the Wolves strung together an impressive six-game unbeaten run and pleasantry reminded their fans of what are they capable of, bringing back memories of nearly perfect opening to the season; this streak got them back in the fight fore Europa League, something deemed nearly impossible just month and so ago but things are looking much brighter from 7th place, just a point off Schalke at 6th.

After being contained for good part of the year, 2020 brought us some new Wolves, bolder and hungrier as they went on a three-game unbeaten run on the road following an opening defeat against Köln with Gisdol’s men going all gung ho, without a single care for defense which nearly cost them during their latest trip to Berlin but they’ve pulled back from 2-0 down to earn a deserved point and extend their streak just a little bit.

Simon Asta is the only Augsburg player who’ll certainly miss new manager’s debut, with loads of players being close to return or simply deemed not fit enough for the pitch, among them Felix Götze, Jan Moravek, Fabian Giefer, Reece Oxford and Julian Schieber.

On the other side, suspended Wouter Weghorst joined already injured Kevin Mbabu, Mamoudou Karamoko, Josuha Guilavogui, William and Ignacio Camacho in the list of players who won’t be traveling with the team on a clash v Augsburg.

Augsburg vs Wolfsburg: Head-to-head (h2h)

  • Overall Stats (17 games): Augsburg 6 wins, 6 draws, Wolfsburg 5 wins.
  • Augsburg have 3-2-3 record at home versus Die Wölfe.
  • Fuggerstadter survived to claim a point (0-0) last time they’ve visited Wolfsburg.
  • The Wolves are currently on four-game unbeaten streak v Augsburg.
  • They were also first to score in five of their last seven encounters.
  • Four of their last six games ended with more than 2.5 goals.

Augsburg vs Wolfsburg: Prediction

Looking at some of the previous games both of these sides played (at home, away, against each other) and seeing all those scorelines straight ripped straight from video games, one can only hope they’ll continue in the same manner and give us a clash to remember, a far cry from their most recent encounter.

While new manager at the helm is known to have a positive effect on the squad, I’m not sure Herrlich can change things so much with so little time spent with the team. His style and approach are diametrically opposite of one favored by Schmidt and that’s one of the reasons I’m siding with Wolfsburg for this one. The Wolves know how to play against Augsburg, currently are doing well in the league and I believe they’ll extend their unbeaten streak for one more game.
