Atalanta vs Napoli
2016/17 Italian Serie A.
Date: Sunday, 2 October 2016
Kick-Off: 14:00 UK,
Venue: Stadio Atleti Azzurri d’Italia (Bergamo).
A high-flying Napooli will hope to heap more misery on a floundering Atalanta as they hope to keep up the pressure on current leaders Juventus.
The Partenopei are still the only side yet to lose in Serie A this season. And whilst Maurizio Sarri will be quite irritated with his team conceding two goals to Portuguese outfit Benfica – thus ruining the chance at a 4-0 shut-out – the Italian tactician will nonetheless be overall pleased with how the team have fared this season. Many had feared that the departure of Gonzalo Higuain would leave a huge hole in Napoli’s attack, but new signing Arkadiusz Milik has been quite excellent in his debut term in Italian football’s top flight.
The Polish international was on target during the rout of Benfica, and so far has netted seven across all competitions. This includes three braces against AC Milan, Dynamo Kiev, and Bologna, and it will not be surprising to see him find the back of the net at some point against Atalanta.
Meanwhile, La Dea managed to earn their second win of the season, which surely will help their confidence. However, that result was against Crotone, who are unfortunately already shaping up to be the league’s whipping boys in their first ever appearance in Serie A. Napoli, of course, will present a much sterner task, as Atalanta have not fared well in their most recent meetings with the Partenopei since their last victory over 2.5 years ago. Fortunately for them, perhaps, they have no real injuries or concerns to trouble them as they will need everyone available for what will be an uphill battle.
Atalanta vs Napoli Head-to-head statistics
- Atalanta have picked up just two points from their last four meetings with Napoli.
- La Dea last defeated the Partenopei on February 2, 2014.
- Three out of their last four games have seen one or both teams finish without all 11 men on the pitch.
- The Partenopei have scored at least two goals in eight out of their last nine Serie A games
Atalanta vs Napoli: Prediction
Atalanta truly will face a tough task here. Don’t be surprised for Napoli to hit them quickly, and Milik to continue his red-hot form by adding more to his tally. Still, La Dea just may be able to snatch a goal, as they have generally not had trouble scoring at home (with the exception of their surprise 1-0 loss to Palermo).
This could also be a relatively high-scoring encounter, as there have been over 2.5 goals scored in six out of Atalanta’s past seven Serie A games, and as noted before, Napoli have netted at least two goals in eight of their past nine. A 3-1 result looks pretty good for this fixture that should not be short of entertainment from start to finish.
