Atalanta vs Genoa
2016/17 Italian Serie A.
Date: Sunday, 30 October 2016
Kick-Off: 11:30 UK,
Venue: Stadio Atleti Azzurri d’Italia (Bergamo).
Despite a rough beginning, Atalanta appear to be finally hitting their stride. La Dea come into this match having earned a hard-fought 1-0 win over Pescara midweek, and that result leaves Gian Piero Gasperini’s men sitting in sixth spot ahead of matchday 11.
Atalanta are currently unbeaten in their past five matches, with four wins and one draw. This includes impressive victories against Napoli and Inter and having ended their Genoa hoodoo last May, the hosts will be again fancying their chances this Sunday against one of Gasperini’s former sides. In fact, Atalanta’s current manager spent two spells with the Grifone, the most recent being from 2013 to 2016 prior to being hired by the Bergamo-based club this past June.
Still, if Atalanta are feeling confident after stringing together some good results, Genoa will be flying high after an impressive result midweek. The Grifone absolutely outplayed and outclassed AC Milan as they routed the Rossoneri 3-0. Given that Milan have been in inspired form, including earning a win over Juventus for the first time in four years, Ivan Juric’s side truly managed to pull off a remarkable feat.
Even more notable is the fact that this win came after losing the Derby della Lanterna to Sampdoria, showing a mental fortitude that the Croatian tactician will hope will endure as they chase a European football spot.
Genoa sit in seventh spot on 15 points, just one place and point behind upcoming opponents Atalanta. The Grifone do have a game in hand due to seeing their tie with Fiorentina called off as a result of bad weather, and they surely will be hoping that their inspiring midweek victory will help them see off their determined opponent.

Atalanta vs Genoa: Prediction
Both sides will be looking to cap off this week with a win. However, Atalanta have been the more consistently improving of the two opponents. As noted before, La Dea have won four out of their last five, and that includes victories against big clubs like Napoli and Inter. Expect goals from both sides, but one interesting thing to note is that Atalanta and Genoa like to score late. The Nerazzurri have actually netted only 25 per cent of their home games before the half-time break, whilst the Grifone only scored 20 per cent of the time in the first 45 on the road.
In addition, Atalanta have been quite strong, and more important, consistently so. Hence, La Dea are slightly more favoured to come out on top, albeit Genoa’s impressive midweek win cannot be discounted.
